Salmon has never been a staple fish in our household. It's more pricey than other fish in the market and has a very distinct flavor that I believe is an acquired taste. Somehow, salmon intimidates me, that's why I rarely cook with it. I personally enjoy salmon dishes from restaurants, and buy smoked salmon as canape from time to time. Recently, I received a batch of frozen wild-caught Alaskan salmon to try. This is a new line from Seaking brand. I regularly buy Seaking's marinated bangus belly so I welcomed these new salmon packs and got excited to come up with something in the kitchen.

Prawns in Oyster Sauce
Half the year is over and I have so much to share! I really need to get my blogging mojo back na, hahahaha... but please be patient and watch out for my upcoming features, okay. For today's Foodie Friday post, let me share this very easy and tasty Chinese-style ulam, which is one of J's favorites, kasi mahilig siya sa prawns.
I just posted on my IG Stories but got several messages asking for the recipe. So, here's a full feature na para mas maraming maka-try. Sorry, no prep photos coz I was not prepared to write about this, hehe... anyways, here's the recipe.
PRAWNS IN OYSTER SAUCE
8-10 prawns (bulik)
(Rinse, trim, butterfly and de-vein. Rinse and drain well. Add some rock salt and set aside)
1 Tbs. minced ginger
1 Tbs. minced garlic
1 Tbs. minced garlic
Chopped leeks
3 Tbs. Oyster sauce diluted in 4-5 Tbs water
Drops of sesame oil
1/2 tsp sugar
cracked pepper
To cook:
Heat little oil in wok, and saute minced ginger. Over high heat, add prawns.
Cook for about 3-4 mins. on high heat, flip until cooked evenly. Remove from pan and set aside.
Lower heat.
In the same wok/pan, make sauce:
Add oil, saute the rest of the ingredients.
Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking (you can add oyster sauce, sugar and water little by little).
Put back prawns in the pan, saute and coat well with sauce.
Cook a few more minutes. Garnish with leeks. Serve immediately.
Previous to this, I made a different recipe - a simple Lemon-Garlic-Butter Butterflied Prawns, pan-fried on a pan.
Hope you'll try both and like it! Let me know! (",)
I'd love to know your thoughts on this post. If you enjoyed this, feel free to share it!

Auntie Arnie's Ready-to-Heat Heirloom Recipes
I'm slowly getting my blogging mojo back (fingers crossed) and lately, I've been drawing inspiration from new experiences and discoveries that I cannot wait to share with you. I used to follow a weekly theme for my features, like Foodie Friday for the first Friday of every month, Family Friday for the second Friday, and so on. Today is the first Friday of April, hence this food post. I was introduced to these great-tasting meals during the event I attended yesterday. Yup, this is hot off the press! =) So, say hello to Auntie Arnie's!

Tokyo Eats, Good Eats
Ah, Japan... So many good food, so little time!
That's how I feel to this day. I was a bit frustrated that I wasn't able to visit some of the recommended dining places in Tokyo, like Nabezo shabu-shabu, rotating sushi restos, and some wagyu beef eateries that abound. Buti nga nakapag-Ichiran kami! =) There was just not enough time and we have five kids with us who have different food preferences. Thank goodness there's the familiar Mc Donald's, 7-11, and Yoshinoya for their quick take-out meals.

A Steakhouse Like No Other: COWRIE GRILL by Manila Hotel
I love beef. I love steak. It's been a while since I've had one good steak meal, kaya it was a welcome treat for me when I got invited to dinner at Cowrie Grill in Greenhills. That was my first time to dine there and let me tell you, it was one of the best meals I've had in months. While I knew that Cowrie Grill was by Manila Hotel, I never expected it was the famed steakhouse of the hotel until my recent visit.

2 Easy Recipes with Healthy Chunky Tuna
As a home cook feeding a family with different preferences and diet needs, I want to serve meals that can be prepared and cooked within 30 minutes or less. It's a challenge. I want things tasty yet simple.
Admittedly, I am a lazy cook. I don't enjoy cooking as much as I enjoy eating, hahaha... but I think normal naman yun no? Moreover, I like the ingredients to be practical and easy to find. One staple food in my panty is the versatile canned tuna. Several months ago, I saw this new blue can of premium tuna on the grocery shelf and decided to try it. Gold Seas was a delicious discovery of healthy chunky goodness. Siksik talaga and walang lansa! Weeks after, I was surprised with a package carrying samples of Gold Seas Tuna Chunks and got to try their other variants. I became a convert to Gold Seas.

7 Things to Love About Hotel H2O
Who doesn't love a staycation? It's a mini vacation without going too far away from home and we're so fortunate to have experienced different accommodations from top hotels in and out of the metro. One such memorable weekend for us was spent at Hotel H2O in Luneta, Manila and that was four years ago. While we've stayed in other hotels since then, Hotel H2O remains to be unforgettable especially for the kids, and let me share with you again why. Some weeks ago, we were invited to revisit this unique establishment. Perfect timing, kasi it was the last weekend before school starts for the girl, so one last hurrah to close the summer break.

DIY Breakfast Bowls for Beginners
What's in a breakfast bowl? Usually a thick fruit smoothie base topped with the good stuff like fresh fruits and nuts, oats, granola, and all sorts of superfood mix. And it's cold and thick. It can also be a simple bowl of yogurt with whatever add-ons you crave. Yan ang hilig ko ngayon and many of my friends are also making their own versions at home. You can too, try it!

Toast To Good Food at Toast Asian Kitchen & Tasting Room
Foodie Friday: Restaurant / Dining
My usual Thursdays with my boy is to accompany him to his M.A.PE classes (music, art, PE) that starts with swimming in the morning, then drums and painting after lunch. Yesterday's schedule was light. He's done with first sem drums and art, so our afternoon freed up. This invitation to lunch came at a right time and the venue was conveniently located, kaya after his swimming class, we went straight to the newly opened Toast Asian Kitchen & Tasting Room in Ayala Mall the 30th in Pasig.

BLISS BOWLS, Deliciously Healthy Smoothie Bowls
First Friday of the month: Foodie Finds / Healthy Food
read more
I love fruit smoothies. My favorites are blended frozen strawberry-banana, ripe mango, and mango-banana combos. Sometimes, I add chia seeds and honey in the mix. When juicing and green smoothies became a fad, I never got into it mainly because I didn't like the idea of drinking and mixing raw veggies in my fruit shakes. Hindi lang ako sanay na iniinom ang gulay unless it's in soup form. But I know they're healthy. Then came these power breakfast smoothie bowls that I see posted on Instagram. It got me curious but have never tried one before until BLISS BOWLS opened.

December na, and this season is all about gift-giving and lots of eating! I have not prepared any new dish or dessert that I feel worthy of serving during holiday parties. Instead, I am sharing my foodie discoveries at Cafe Madrigal and Bar from our recent staycation at the first serviced residence in the south, Somerset Alabang Manila.

Foodie Friday: Titas Brunch at Toast Manila
First Friday of the month: Dining / Restaurant
I'm not a morning person. It's so difficult for me to get up earlier than 6 am (unless we need to travel). That is why I like brunch time better than an early breakfast, kasi hindi na ako antok and I can take my sweet time to savor my meal compared to a few rushed bites while I prepare breakfast and baon for the kids and bring them to school. I enjoy this mid-morning meal when I'm alone or have a casual brunch date with friends. The most recent was with fellow titas hosted by Toast Manila in San Juan.

Foodie Friday: Crunchy Fried Oysters
I love seafood. Aside from crabs and shrimps, scallops and oysters are in the top of my favorite food list. It's not easy to find fresh oysters when I buy my produce and groceries so I indulge from time to time when we dine at restaurants serving them. Medyo mahal lang. I still remember the baked oysters in 5 ways that we always order from Via Mare fine dining when I was still working in Tektite Towers. I dated myself again... I know, that was eons ago! But those were memorable times, and dining there were saved for special occasions or when treating an advertiser-client. I haven't had bake oysters in a long time. These days, I'd be lucky if I find fresh oysters in the market. Usually, I find freshly packed shucked oysters at SM Pasig Hypermarket and buy a pack to cook at home.

Foodie Friday: Baked Leftover Spaghetti with Spinach
First Friday of the month: Mom-Cook / Pasta / Recipe
Leftovers. How do you serve leftovers to make it appetizing again? Most of the time, I just re-heat and serve as it. There are days when I get crazy and in the mood to rework a boring leftover dish and use whatever ingredients I may have in the ref or pantry. This happened last night. Let me present to you my leftover spaghetti, now baked and even more delicious!

Round-Up of Easy-to-Cook Baon Ideas (Packed Lunch)
First Friday of the month: Mom-Cook / Recipes
Back to school nanaman and most moms are making an effort to prepare their children's baon or packed lunch for school. We're talking about a meal for lunch, not a snack. Usually, in my case, heating left-over food from dinner is the way to go. When I'm the mood to wake up early, I try to whip up simple 15-minute dishes.
Here's a round-up of recipes that have been tried and tested on my husband and kids. These are tasty lunch meals to-go for your family members.
Click on the link or photo for the full recipe.

(Ideally, adobo should be cooked the day before, save a portion and re-heat for baon the next day.))
(You can also blanche the beans first before you sauté.)
(Omit ground beef from recipe and use only sausages with the sauce for faster cooking time. )
(If you chance upon bottled bulgogi sauces in the grocery, grab one and make instant dishes with your choice of meat.)
(With this fried rice, chop and mix in any left over meat, or even Spam, to make it chunky and hearty.)
(One of my all-time favorites -- easy, tasty, and healthy.)
(Blanched broccoli works really well for this recipe too.)
(Not really a lunch meal but, hey, this winning breakfast food is a hit anytime of the day!)
Do you have easy-to-prepare baon meals you can share? =)

Foodie Friday: Sauteed Young Corn and Broccoli
First Friday of the month: Mom-Cook / Recipe
I am taking a break from meats and sharing you this easy-peasy veggie dish for the whole family. You still have the option to mix beef strips using the same recipe. When I am extra lazy, I simply sauté only the broccoli in garlic, hehehehe... but this one is definitely more tasty!
Keeping this post short and simple so we can all enjoy the weekend. Here you go:
SAUTEED YOUNG CORN & BROCCOLI
1 medium head of broccoli
1/2 can of young corn
2 tablespoons chopped button mushrooms
1 tablespoon minced garlic
3 - 4 tablespoons oyster sauce
1/4 cup water
black pepper
sesame oil
cooking oil
To prepare:
Boil water in a small pot or saucepan.
Trim and cut broccoli to bite-size pieces, keeping florets whole, or sliced in two if too big.
Blanche broccoli in rolling boiling water for about 2 minutes.
Drain liquid from the can of young corn and slice diagonally.
Drain liquid from the can of young corn and slice diagonally.
Drain blanched broccoli.
Set aside veggies.
To cook:
Heat pan and add enough oil to sauté the garlic.
Add oyster sauce and pour water little by little until your desired thickness of the sauce. Adjust to your taste.
Toss in broccoli, young corn, mushrooms in the pan. Cook over low heat.
Add some ground pepper and a few drops of sesame oil (go easy on sesame oil).
Mix well or until all veggies are well coated in sauce.
You can add more oyster sauce if you like.
Serve immediately. This meatless dish works very well as a rice topping or mixed with cooked egg noodles! Instant Chinese meal! =)
Happy cooking!

Foodie Friday: What Have I Been Eating???
First Friday of the month: Food Finds / Dessert
Dessert. Cake. Ice Cream. Nuts. Chocolate. For the past month, my foodie finds have been mostly baked goods and sweets, except for this natural cracked pili nut. I really have a sweet tooth and it's simply a challenge for me to refuse desserts. The sad truth is that I have an intolerance for gluten and eggs -- what pastries are mainly made of. Well, Mother's Day naman...okay, Mother's month, hehehe, so I'll "cheat" na muna! =)

Foodie Friday: Oriental Fish Cakes
First Friday of the month: Mom-Cook / Recipe
Hello! I'm back from my Holy Week blog break and with an easy-peasy recipe for this month's Foodie Friday. I got inspired by this dish from fellow blogging mama, Levy. She posted a photo of her fish cakes on Instagram and I immediately asked for the recipe. Since I wasn't inspired to experiment in the kitchen lately, I thought I'd try out simple dishes I spot on IG and FB. We got tired of our usual crispy panko fish fillet, and since it was Lent, I decided to cook fish cakes last week.

Foodie Friday: Sultan Mediterranean Grill Opens in San Juan
First Friday of the month: Restaurant / Foodie Finds
The 3 stand-out dishes for me are... (drum roll)...
If you've been following me on social media, you should know by now that I am a foodie at heart. I appreciate a wide range of cuisines and is adventurous enough to try the unique and exotic. A week ago, I was a guest at the first mediterranean restaurant in our side of town, along Wilson street. Say hello to Sultan Mediterranean Grill!
San Juan has been a foodie haven for years and I feel so lucky to be living in a neighborhood where many fantastic dining places have flourished. Sultan Mediterranean Grill joins the roster of my recommended restaurants in our area, populated mostly by Asian eateries and cafés. Finally, I don't have to drive to a mall to get my mid-east-mediterranean fix. Konting tumbling lang, nasa Sultan-Wilson nako. Heehee!
The interiors are modern and spacious, with white-washed walls and a distinct mediterranean feel especially when you see the accent colors and the wall with gorgeous tiles. Sayang nga I arrived late and was not able to take more photos of the restaurant anymore coz there was a steady stream of diners coming in. Good business!
My friends and I were treated to some of Sultan's specialties that made us all so full and happy. Even the kids who joined our lunch seemed to enjoy their dishes.
Here's our authentic mediterranean lunch at Sultan:
FALAFEL for starters. These are fried balls of mashed chickpeas mixed with fragrant spices, on a bed of hummus and chopped veggies. Served with pita. I'm not big on chickpeas so I only had one ball. I had to say I liked the soft-crunchy contrast of this one.
Not your ordinary CHICKEN CURRY. As expected, the chicken was perfectly cooked in this thick sauce, with a curry spice flavor that's not overpowering to the palette. It was good.
For sharing, this KEBAB PLATTER lets you choose any 4 sticks of kebab or koobideh (grilled minced meat).
We had beef, chicken, lamb, and beef koobideh. All the meats were tasty, but a bit overcooked for me. This value-for-money platter goes well with the spiced yogurt sauce (which they have on every table) and any of their rice. The platter comes with grilled tomato.
If you order a regular kebab plate with 1 stick of kebab or koobideh, it will be served with salad, grilled tomato, and rice.
You can always add any Extras to your meat platters, like french fries, grilled tomato and onion, feta cheese. Or maybe upgrade your rice from plain to buttered, or to this flavorful beryani rice. We all loved it!
BRAISED LAMB SHANKS -- moist and fall-off-the-bone tender, stewed and braised with spices and served with buttered rice. No gamey, funky aftertaste that I was expecting! Winner!!! The gravy gave it a boost of flavor as well.
For someone who was never fond of lamb, I even surprised myself by having much more than my usual bite-sized cut of lamb meat. It was so good, I finished more than half the plate of rice which was meant for sharing, hehehehe! This plate did not leave my side.
Here's the clincher: All four of us admitted we're not fans of lamb, but it was unanimous that this lamb shank was the star of our lunch. Definitely a must-try!
Here's the clincher: All four of us admitted we're not fans of lamb, but it was unanimous that this lamb shank was the star of our lunch. Definitely a must-try!
Another memorable dish was this traditional Greek dish -- MOUSSAKA. Mmmmmm...
It's creamy and cheesy, with generous layers of minced beef and eggplant. It looked like a lasagna, served with warm pita. Pang-comfort food. This was wiped out!
Hot off the grill, these beef kebabs made up the SOUVLAKI PLATTER.
Beef was moist, tender and well-seasoned (you can also request for lamb), with french fries and salad on the side. These were perfectly grilled. I also ate this with more rice! =)

If you're into yogurt and fruit shakes, you can have your fix here. They can combine both in one smoothie. I gave their Mango Yogurt Shake a try and it was just okay for me, not as sweet and creamy like a regular milkshake, which I expected. My friends liked their yogurt shakes. I'd go for a regular fruit shake next time, or just have Iced Tea.
After all the delicious grilled and saucy meats and carbs, time to cleanse our palette. We were so excited to try their unique ice cream flavors. After the first taste, we all agreed lahat masarap! Serious.
Take your pick, clockwise from top: NUTS & ROSES with chopped pistachio and sweet rose essence; BASIL is creamy and with a basil-fresh taste; SILKY AMBER is a decadent salted butter caramel flavor.
Take your pick, clockwise from top: NUTS & ROSES with chopped pistachio and sweet rose essence; BASIL is creamy and with a basil-fresh taste; SILKY AMBER is a decadent salted butter caramel flavor.
From their successful restaurant in Salcedo Village, Makati to this new branch on a quiet strip along Wilson street, Sultan Mediterranean Grill will surely create another steady following with their flavorful specialties. Its family-friendly ambiance plus reasonably priced meals are major draws as well. For about PhP250, you can already have a very tasty and satisfying kebab rice plate and drink!
Look at us, big smiles talaga sa busog! Thank you for having us, SULTAN! I'll be back, for sure.
