Holiday Fun in Taiwan - Window on China Theme Park

XIAO REN GUO Theme Park a.k.a. Window on China Theme Park was in our must-visit list while I was planning the itinerary for our holiday trip to Taiwan last December. J insisted on it. I've never heard of this until J told me about it. Childhood dream daw niya na makapunta dun, kasi he was fascinated by this miniature theme park ever since he learned about it when he was a little boy. I was reluctant at first because with all the Taiwan tour recommendations I've read, not one source have mentioned about this theme park. True enough, this Window on China (WOC) still exists and is thriving. WOC is the oldest theme park of Taiwan, located in Taoyuan City, which opened its doors in 1984.

Holiday Fun in Taiwan - Part 2

We spent a relaxing holiday in Taiwan last December and I'm sharing with you the simple day tours I planned for the family. Last month, I featured part 1 here where we covered the northern coast with a private car and tour guide. For day 3 of our trip, we skipped the guide and booked a car with driver via Ownrides.com. Our day started at Chiang Kai Shek Memorial.

Holiday Fun in Taiwan - Part 1

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
It's the most wonderful time of the year! I truly believe it is and what I always look forward to during the yuletide season is getting together with friends, relatives, and planning a family getaway, whether it's a simple staycation or a few days out of the country. Last year, we went to Tokyo. This year, we went on a 5-day vacation to Taipei, Taiwan.

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar Heritage Resort in Bataan

Third Friday of the month: Fun Friday / Travel / Recreation

Take a peek into a bygone era -- 18th century Philippines, reconstructed on a 400-hectare property development in Bagac, Bataan. Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is a "heritage resort by the sea", a living museum with over twenty colonial houses and buildings from different parts of the country that were transported and rebuilt to recreate old towns back in the day.  When I learned about Las Casas a few years ago, I was already intrigued and wanted to bring the family there. We finally got to stay for two nights last weekend and the sights left me in awe.

Field Trip to Hardin sa Tabing Ilog Campsite in Nasugbu, Batangas

Third Friday of the month:  Fun and Recreation / Travel

This month's Fun Friday feature is all about my girl's school culminating event for their social studies where the second graders and parents went on an exposure trip to Batangas. Hardin Sa Tabing Ilog Campsite was the venue for their year-end activity. This trip to an actual river was the perfect backdrop that allowed the kids to reflect and showcase what they've learned about Pasig River, it's surrounding communities and rehabilitation, and how it compares to rivers from around the world.

Fun Friday: Cook, Snap, Eat, Chat with Mothers Who Brunch

Third Friday of the month:  Recreation / Hobby

I cook when I'm in the mood. I have an appetite for a wide range of cuisines, and also have fun taking snapshots of food then posting on social media. For me, it's about sharing my recipes, what I eat, and my foodie finds. Learning new tips and tricks in photo styling and framing really interests me. That's exactly what happened a few weekends ago at the Viking range showroom during the Mothers Who Brunch event.

Family Friday: Drums Recital and Tour of Plaza San Luis, Intramuros

Happy 117th Philippine Independence Day to all Filipinos around the world!

Great timing that I'm featuring my boy's recent drums recital held at Casa Blanca in Intramuros, Manila. If you know your Philippine history, Intramuros, known as the walled city, used to be the seat of power during the Spanish colonization. The declaration of our independence from colonial Spain was held in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898.

Fun Friday: Oreo Playdate at Fun Farm in Sta. Elena

Third Friday of the month:  Travel / Recreation

It was a school holiday last Feburary 25 so it's a perfect day to set out for Laguna and bring the "Oreo families" to the farm.  The Sta. Elena Fun Farm in Cabuyao is a favorite back-to-nature recreational destination, making it the ideal venue for our playdate and bring the whole gang for a day of outdoor adventure with Oreo.

5-Step Canon SELPHY Family Portrait Project

I'm a self-confessed pathological picture-taker, even with our old reliable film camera. After every event or trip, I immediately have my rolls of film developed, printed, and then distributed to family members and friends who are in the photos. Then came the digital cameras. There was an avalanche of digital photos in CDs, hard drives, and USB. Horror! I'm stuck with 10 years worth of pictures! I only use our lowly printer for photo prints whenever I need to frame portraits and memorable events, or submit for school. Here's where a Canon SELPHY comes in handy.

Hamster Tales: Sleep Series

Sarap ng tulog!

I've been sharing snapshots of our little pets since we had our first pair in July last year.  In the past few months, I fancied taking photos of them with my iPhone while they're asleep, and you may have seen some of them on my Instagram (click on the first four photos). I tagged them as #JMhamstertales. I captioned my posts with the Tagalog phrase, "sarap ng tulog" - an expression where you see someone who is sleeping soundly.  These hamsters just looked so doped -- well, some say they looked dead, hahahaha... but I agree, they do!

2014 Chinese New Year Revelry in Chinatown, Manila

We are now in the year of the Wooden Horse.  Chinese new year fell on January 31, 2014 and my family decided to troop to Binondo and join the festivities in Chinatown. The first time we went there to celebrate was last 2012 CNY, which I also featured here.  And let me tell you again, for those who do not know, we have the oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594.  Binondo, Manila is most alive this time of the year as the event attracts people from all walks of life, even tourists.

Our First Christmas Family Portrait at The Picture Company

We recently had our portraits taken at The Picture Company as part of their special Christmas package for the SoMoms.  The offer came at a perfect time since we can finally have a Christmas family photo, and also to mark the boy's 10th birthday.  It was like a homecoming of sorts for my family, especially for my boy since he had his first ever portrait on his first birthday.  I am confident we can expect the same quality of service from them.

The Picture Company in Podium is a familiar place to us.  Though it was our first holiday portrait session, it was not our first time at their studio.  We've had photo shoots here several times in the past since 2004.
The Picture Company at Podium Mall in Ortigas Center, Pasig City

The studio got bigger since our initial visit, with more props and costumes, and now offers a wider range of creative photo products and services.

J and I are not really fond of having a formal studio shoot, but with our first-born then, we thought it's a wonderful memento to have his solo portraits taken.

The boy turns 1 - Nov. 2004

On his 2nd birthday, 2005

In 2007, it was with our baby girl and their cousin who visited from the US.

In costume, halloween 2008 just the two of them.

Suffice to say, all our sessions at The Picture Company through the years were fun and pleasant, bright and cheery, and the photos were simply beautiful, as you can see with all the pictures here. Despite the expected challenges when photographing children, we still got a lot of really good shots every session.

Fast forward to 2013, Ishee Sayson, TPC Podium store manager, promptly arranged for our session.  She emailed our booking confirmation complete with the steps, and several pegs for our theme and outfits. How efficient! We had some last-minute setback, so I requested to move our shoot the following week. Fortunately, we were immediately accommodated.
Booking confirmation

What I like about The Picture Company:
  • Several branches/studios to choose from
  • Efficient booking and confirmation process - with email correspondence and follow-ups via text/calls
  • Bright, clean, and spacious studios (I only went to Podium branch)
  • Wide selection of costumes and props
  • Excellent lighting
  • Excellent photo editing and printing
  • Super patient (especially with kids), friendly, and engaging photographers

Here are a few outtakes from our session ... as usual, the kids were so playful.  There were moments when they refused to cooperate or got distracted with the props, but Ishee was so sweet and patient with them. She directed us well during the entire shoot, from blocking to posing, and even cues to look away or smile, heehee... =) Thanks Ishee!

Over the years, I can say that the quality of photography services and their final output at The Picture Company have been consistent.  The rates are not cheap, but you get what you pay for.  With so many good takes, it's so hard to choose and make a shortlist from the proofs.  I ordered extra sheets too so I can give copies to the grannies! =)

So here are a few of the final shots we chose:
I'm very satisfied with how it all turned out and I'm excited to see all the final prints so I can have them framed!

My favorite family shot.  This will be on the Christmas cards, and gift tags as well.

Outfit change. Formal this time.

I get a solo...  =)

I also availed of the #SmilesForRelief photo project.  By purchasing this digital profile picture for just Php500, 100% of proceeds will provide food packs for 3 families affected by typhoon Yolanda. You can still help too.

The Picture Company has an ongoing holiday promo:

Avail of 20 personalized Christmas cards + 20 matching gift tags when you purchase 5 sheets.
Hurry, book now coz this promo will run until Dec. 15 only.

I can't wait to get our first ever family Christmas cards and tags!

The Boy is Turning 10

Freestyle Friday: Kids / Celebration

The boy will turn 10 on Sunday.  He's my first-born, which also means I'd be celebrating 10 years of motherhood as well!  I can't help but wish for time to slow down so the kids won't grow up too fast!

Fun Friday: What's Your Favorite Childhood Hobby?

Third Friday of the month:  Hobbies / Recreation

I've been de-cluttering some parts of the house lately and in the process, I've unearthed so many of my old stuff which I brought with me after I got married.  I'm not so much of a pack rat, but rather more on sentimental, especially with things that reminded me of my younger years, who I was, what I did, what I liked then.  These hobbies really helped define who I am today, and how I influenced my children with their own interests.

Fun Friday: Photo Shoot at Blow-Up Babies

Third Friday of the month:  Recreation / Event / Family Activity

This was our first family pictorial in almost eight years, so I am considering this session a family event.

After the boy turned two, we did not have a photo shoot with the whole family anymore, even after the girl arrived.  I regret that now.  We only get a chance to take family pictures during parties and special occasions. That's why I was thrilled when Blow-Up Babies tied up with the SoMoms to have all our portraits taken with each of our families.  This is my chance to have professionals take our pictures -- something that I can blow up and have framed.

My 3 Things: Photography

#my3things #photography

Cameras.  The tools of the trade.  In my case, these are my "tools" for blogging, and more importantly, to capture life's moments.

If you've been following my blog and social networking sites, you know I enjoy taking pictures - the pathological picture-taker, that's me! =)  Then came Instagram, my current craze and where #my3things began.

As a hobby, for my blog, for sharing images on social media, I alternately use all three cameras (well, one happens to be a phone with a cam):

  1. Canon EOS 500D (Rebel T1i) - I started blogging in 2009 and used a Lumix TZ3 for my photos.  By the end of that year, I got my wish - a dSLR as a Christmas gift for myself.  I love it!  It's user-friendly, takes crisp images, and the weight is lighter than most dSLR.  I often use this baby during social events (blog events included), trips, and family celebrations.
  2. Lumix LX5 - After two years of toting the bulky 500D everywhere, I knew I wanted a more compact camera since our old Lumix broke.  We don't have a spare camera except hubby's iPhone.  Besides, he doesn't like using the big one either.  Christmas of 2011, we got our second Lumix.  Features and picture quality are outstanding as well. And I like that it's white.
  3. iPhone4 - I'm a late bloomer when it comes to smart phones.  I just had one last July and it changed me forever! =) Instagram is my stress reliever.  Somehow, looking at IG photos relaxes me and puts me in a good mood...and helps me get sleepy at night too, hahaha! With the built-in camera, I can now take pictures of whatever, anytime, anywhere, and sharing them instantly on my social network.  The apps are just as fun to use!

Are you a shutter bug like me? What's your #my3things #photography?

My 3 Things

#my3things

That's the hashtag I use when I post photos of random groups of stuff I regularly use, or consume.
My basic accessories.

I enjoy taking photos immensely - did I mention I'm a self-confessed pathological picture-taker and also an Instagram addict? =)  Whatever catches my fancy, I try to take a snapshot.  I love taking photos of food, articles of clothing, accessories, nature, and especially my kids.  However, since both are getting older, and my girl will be in big school soon, I am now trying to avoid sharing frontal shots of them to keep their privacy.  Since I'll be sharing less of my kids (particularly their faces) and myself here, might as well share more of the things around me, right?

Last month, I re-posted this photo below on my Facebook page when I decided to add My 3 Things as a new section in the blog.  This was my first #my3things post on Instagram last October.  I thought I was the first to use the #my3things hashtag, but discovered there were two other Igers who used the hashtag before me.  Anyway, I knew I wanted to post more of my 3 things.

How it all started:

It was a typical school day, and while in the car on my to fetch the boy, I usually apply my basic make-up
  1. Kate Mineral Powder Foundation
  2. Burt's Bees lip shimmer
  3. Lash Curler
On the spot, I took this shot and wrote:  3 things #FOTD everyday (for those not familiar, FOTD is "face of the day").  I then added the hashtag #my3things since I want to tag this and post more group shots on IG.
3 things #FOTD everyday

Second #my3things post with the usual colors you'll see me wear on a typical day:
  1. White top
  2. Blue jeans
  3. Vieta brown bag
That's me.  (OOTD is "outfit of the day")
My typical colors #OOTD

Third #my3things post last New Year's Eve:
  1. Vieta brown bag - bought on sale last October
  2. Braun Buffel - my 10-year-old wallet
  3. Longchamp - roomy red coin purse, a gift
May they always be full this 2013...

The top photo was my most recent #my3things post.
  1. Tag Heuer - watch was part of the engagement gift almost 11 years ago, and J has the men's size.
  2. Pearl studs - gift from my mother
  3. Wedding ring - my hand just feels different without it on my finger
I use them together almost every day since these accessories can go with anything I wear.

The objective is simple:
To shoot and share photos of groups of things that I use together or consume regularly.

If you are following me on InstagramTwitter, or Facebook, you will see #my3things instantly.

On the blog, you'll learn more about each one, and know the story behind them.  I'll be sharing one photo at a time.  This is another window into the life Mom-Friday. =)

Second Friday of the month:  Parenthood / Kids
