Always Panalo si Mommy at Puregold

I have a confession: I consider grocery time as "me time". Feel ko talaga mag-grocery shopping mag-isa coz I find it relaxing while I take my time browsing through the aisles, comparing prices, and discovering new products and good deals. Marami niyan sa Puregold 'coz they priced their goods at more affordable prices. I even made hashtags #MomGrocer and #MomFindsPH because aside from eating, I truly enjoy going to the supermarket. Mana ata ako sa mama ko, eat and shop, heehee. But, there are days when my kids make it more fun to shop too, kasi I learn about their preferences. Sometimes, they even surprise me by picking out grocery items they know I like and what we need for home. That's always panalo for me!

My mother is a great cook and serves her dishes with love. Laboring in the kitchen comes with an appreciation for beautiful and quality cooking and dining wares. Maliwanag ang Pasko for Island Schools

"Light up your homes and show the world that the nation is moving as one, towards a brighter tomorrow."

That line was part of the script I wrote for a TV ad over a decade ago.  It was a corporate holiday greeting to highlight the progress of the country during that period of economic growth.  When I was tapped to do this feature for Meralco's Maliwanag ang Pasko, I immediately remembered that specific line and thought it is still very relevant, no?

Image from Meralco website

To tell you the truth, I was not aware about the thrust of this lighting project until now.  Learning about their charitable cause gave me a better appreciation of Meralco's annual Christmas program which was launched in 2006.  This year, Meralco's Maliwanag ang Pasko campaign has a 3-pronged approach to make Christmas even brighter and more fun:

  1. Liwanag Parks - Meralco has tied up with the Department of Tourism to help promote the Philippines as a Christmas destination (since our country has the longest Christmas celebration) by creating more Liwanag Parks in and around the Greater Manila Area.
  2. Liwanag raffle - Meralco customers like me have a chance to win PhP 5,000 daily! Simply upload photos of your lighted homes or any of the Liwanag Parks to www.facebook.com/meralco until December 22.
  3. School Electrification - By supporting this program, we will help energize island schools to benefit more children and communities around the country.
Have you ever experienced studying or reading in the dark?
I did a few times, during power outages when I was still a student, and also while I was tutoring my son.  It sucks.  I knew it was just temporary, but it was very difficult to accomplish anything.  The sad reality is there are still areas in the country that live in "darkness" in this day and age.

We all need light. We need power.  Electricity is essential for us to keep up with the rest of the word, and thankfully, Meralco's Maliwanag ang Pasko initiative is energizing one school at a time, helping communities every year.
Gaudencio Abordo National High School - Palawan

Beneficiaries of the Maliwanag Ang Pasko program:
  1. Cagbalete Island National High School (Mauban, Quezon)
  2. Cagsi-ay III National High School (Mauban, Quezon)
  3. San Fernando National High School (El Nido/Bacuit, Palawan)
  4. Teneguiban National High School (El Nido, Palawan)
  5. Gaudencio Abordo (Bulawit) National High School (Linapacan Island, Palawan)
  6. Pandanon National High School (Jetafe, Bohol)
  7. Cabul-An National High Shool (Buenavista, Bohol)
  8. Rizal National High School (Basilisa, Dinagat Islands)
  9. Cab-Ilan National High School (Dinagat Islands)
  10. New Nazareth National High School (Dinagat Islands)

Havaianas Design A Smile 2 at Mommy Mundo Bazaar 2012

"What will you do to make other people smile?"
If you have, or know of, children between 5 to 12 years old, have them answer that question above through a drawing and submit their artwork for a worthy cause, which may also win them fantastic prizes!

Like many school kids, my boy and girl both love to draw.  I think this will be a great exercise for kids' creativity by joining this charitable project spearheaded by Havaianas called Design A Smile (DAS). Kids can draw on the spot and submit their entries at the Havaianas DAS booth during the Mommy Mundo Bazaar on November 24-25 at the Rockwell Tent.  As a member of the newly-formed Mommy Mundo SoMoms (which I will blog about very soon), I'm happy to support this cause so I'm sharing with you this wonderful opportunity for your kids to participate and enjoy while you visit the event this weekend.

So, what is Design A Smile?

Havaianas Design a Smile is a design competition for the benefit of Operation Smile Philippines, a non-profit organization which provides life-changing surgeries to children with cleft lips and cleft palates.  This year's theme is "Paying it Forward: Kids Helping Kids”.  Starting this November to January 2013, artistically inclined kids from 5 to 12 years old can join.  The design should answer the question “What will you do to make other people smile?” and illustrations should be submitted at partner events nationwide, beginning with the Bonifacio Global City Passion Fest at Bonifacio High Street from November 23 to 25, and at the Mommy Mundo Bazaar at the Rockwell Tent from November 24 to 25.

The grand prize winner will have his or her design produced as a limited edition print to be part of the Havaianas 2014 Collection.  A percentage of its sales will help fund the operations of Operation Smile.

Look what's in store for this year's qualifying participants:
Finalists will receive:
a. Gift Pack from Havaianas
b. Bobble Water Bottles
c. Pininho flip-flop accessories
d. Gifts from Hobbes and Landes
e. Gift Certificates from McDonald’s

Grand Prize winner will receive the following (in addition to the above):
a. Production of design into an actual Havaianas Smile Pair
b. Plaque of recognition
c. Special Gift from Sony

See full mechanics here.
Join this design competition and visit the DAS Booth at Mommy Mundo Bazaar on November 24 and 25, 2012.

Like the Havaianas Philippines Official Facebook page to find out other events that the Havaianas Design a Smile 2 booth will be visiting.

Own a Letter Necklace by Panopio for Zalora!

I love jewelry. I appreciate good design and fine craftsmanship.  For a short time, I even ventured into selling loose diamonds and limited edition jewelry pieces.  So yes, I know my way around precious metals and stones. =)  I really consider them as an investment, and if I were to choose, I'd go for fine jewelry over designer shoes and bags in a heartbeat.

Here's the newest addition to my modest jewelry collection - a shiny new 'M' letter necklace courtesy of PanopioThis beautiful and classic Block Letter Initial Pendant is part of Panopio for Zalora - a custom line of jewelry exclusively designed and crafted by Panopio for online store Zalora.

I Finally Won A Blog Contest

Mom-Friday is a WINNER!  Not just 1, but 2 prizes! Awesome!

After more than a year of blogging, and trying my luck at joining a handful of blog contests and raffle promos, I finally hit jackpot one fateful Friday morning of September.

Winning Entry #5
My girl Jen, traveling mama of Folie a Deux, ran a Luxe City Guide raffle here a month ago showcasing some of the greatest cities around the world, like Barcelona, Rome, Venice, New York, Dubai, London...all of which I fervently wish to visit someday. To win a Luxe City Guide, all you have to do was write what city guide you like to have. I chose NYC, took a chance and expected nothing.

I got a Tweet one morning saying Mom-Friday won! Woohoo!
The package arrived only recently (mailed straight from London!) and I just can't wait to get my hands on this wonderful gift!
The thought of actually winning something, big or small, was worth all the effort. After browsing through my LUXE City Guide - NYC, it certainly proved that big things come in small packages. It's a perfect travel companion indeed. The guide is even small enough to fit in my wristlet!
Now, all I have to do is find the money to get me and my gang to that "concrete jungle where dreams are made of...!"  Any sponsors? :-)))

You too can win a fab city guide of your choice by joining the second Luxe City Guide giveaway here, this time from Jen's travel blog, The Travel Provocateur. Hurry, you only have until the 30th to join!

Special Prize #5
The second email I received was from Frannywanny, also a food and travel blogger who ran an anniversary contest with accessory trend-spotters Jean & Rosz. I was really eyeing the multi-strand necklace, so I typed away and posted my entry.  But then again, I never expected to win any of the prizes at stake since there were more than 30 entries they needed to screen and choose from.

That same morning, it was such a pleasant surprise to hear from Fran that I won the Neutrogena Ultrasheer Sunblock (prize #5)! Cool! She delivered it straight to my doorstep.

I think my stars were aligned that day since the good news came on the same day I announced the winners for My Mom-Friday's very first blog raffle contest! Triple awesome! And the winning entries are both lucky #5!  There's really no such thing as coincidence!

Now I feel like running another blog contest here...(thinking)... ;)

Fun Friday: WIN a Fro-yo Treat from TUTTI FRUTTI Centris Walk!

Third Friday of the month:  Fun & Recreation

There's a fro-yo frenzy now sweeping the nation, and TUTTI FRUTTI blew me away with more than 40 flavors!!!

Last weekend, the kids and I finally had a taste of one of the newest frozen yogurts in town -- Tutti Frutti at Centris Walk. Tutti Frutti is a very popular self-service, soft serve fro-yo US franchise which boasts of more than 50 flavors. But here in the Philippines, they carry 44 flavors. Still, among currently available fro-yo brands in the country, Tutti Frutti has the most flavors on offer.

With the invitation of our friends from Tutti Frutti Centris Walk, which opened its doors only last July, we were finally able to try some of their healthy and refreshing frozen yogurt. Like a kid in a candy store, I didn't know what to have with a row of flavors and assortment of toppings to choose from!  And all flavors are low- or non-fat. Add to that, the whole ambiance of this outlet is very cool and contemporary, with their gorgeous red lounge chairs calling you to sit on them, to chill out and indulge.

I found out they have unique and interesting flavors, with quirky names, like: Very Berry Raspberry, Kiwi, French Vanilla, Cappuccino, Lychee, Strawberry Cheesecake, P-Nut Butter, and bestsellers like their Taro, Almond, Death By Chocolate, and Original Tart. Check out more flavors here. There are 8 flavors available everyday, which they change every two weeks so customers can expect something new each time.

One of the partners, Cath, disclosed that they only use top quality ingredients from the U.S. like (the famous brand) Ghirardelli for their chocolate flavor.  And they have flavors unique only to Tutti Frutti such as Guava, Pomegranate, Coconut, Just Peach, Orange Cream, Melony, and Pina Colada, among others.

Here's my boy eagerly pointing to the 'Death by Chocolate' which he can't wait to try.  It has a light, creamy chocolate flavor, though I was expecting it to have a richer chocolate-y taste, the kid seemed to like it.
The boy's cup of Death by Chocolate topped with fresh mangoes, cookie dough and choco chips

I actually liked their' Original Tart', but taste is really subjective as customers have different preferences on the level of tartness. And how can I miss my favorite taro flavor, which I shared with my girl. As expected, their 'Taro-bly Delicious' is a winner! Subtly creamy, not too sweet, no artificial taste. No wonder this light purple confection is a bestseller.
The girl with her 'Taro-bly  Delicious' showered with her usual colored sprinkles and mini marshmallows

Aside for a wide selection of delectable flavors, they also offer 37 toppings such as fresh fruits, assorted chocolates and nuts like almond chips and walnuts, cereals, cookie crumbs, and syrups. Yum!

Whether you crave for a full tub or a small serving, Tutti Frutti has 3 cup sizes you can choose from to satisfy your craving. Their 'Medium' cup, good for 2 when full, is actually a counterpart of a 'Large' cup from other brands. I was already very satisfied with our regular cup (",)
5 flavors down, so many more to go!!!  I can't wait to try their Almond, Tutti Frutti, and Coffee flavors!

For their store opening salvo,
Tutti Frutti Centris Walk is giving away

Mom-Friday Make-Over Photo Contest - UPDATE

Having this contest is quite nerve-wracking as I do not know what to expect, really.

Will there be any participants at all? Are my prizes attractive enough? Will I be able to have choices before Friday?
These are just a few of the questions in my head, stressing me out since I thought of the contest weeks ago. But i took the risk, and hopefully, some of you out there would support me on my first "interactive" venture for the blog.

After posting my announcement yesterday, I am happy to have received some very encouraging and funny feedback from well-meaning friends.  Some found my criteria to be too broad, while others want the prizes for free!  =D

Though on the previous post I stated that no new entries until next Friday, today, I thought I can share with you my first two headers just to give you, especially new visitors to this site, an idea how they looked like and why I used them in the first place.

Header #1
The Tiffany charm bracelet caught my eye and immediately, I found it to be the fitting image for my newly-launched blog site. For me, this is a very beautiful, and elegant, symbol for Mom-Friday.  Gold is precious. The engraved heart-shaped lock charm literally spells MOM. And it symbolizes the core of being a mother which is love.

Header #2
Chinese silk pin cushion with five hanging "babies". My mom gave this to me before I got married.  Of course this is for sewing. I guess she gave this to me 'coz she expects me to do some sewing after I get married -- stitching loose buttons, ripped hem, torn fabric toys, etc., etc.  Eventually, I did some sewing.  But I found this too pretty, too unique that I did not dare punch on hole on it.  And it reminded me of our old smiling Buddah with many children climbing and hanging on to him.  Very nurturing, multi-tasking, domesticated.  So I used this to replace #1.

The image can be anything, a symbol perhaps. It can even be just a silhouette of a mother and child, or an animated drawing of a lady with loads of shopping bags on one hand and a grocery basket on the other, with a kid in tow. Dig up old files for that gem of an image or create new ones! Anything goes.

So hurry, send in your Mom-Friday images now and get a chance to win some cool prizes!  The mystery prize is still in works and I will announce it before the deadline on March 4.

Mom-Friday Site Make-Over Photo Contest

Wanted: New Header

In line with my blog site make-over which I announced here earlier, I am very excited to give all of you a chance to be a part of this all-important phase in creating Mom-Friday's new look.  A major element of any site is it's overall theme, look and feel, which is mainly represented by the Image Header.  It is the window to your site. It sets the tone. It creates the first impression. It introduces the reader to what the site is all about.

This header you see here now, as I have mentioned before, is just temporary.  While I was undergoing site "renovation", I found myself in a quandary and can't really decide what's the best image, or if I will be able to take a beautiful photo I can use. And eureka! A Photo Contest!

I thought this is the best opportunity for me to invite all of you to contribute your lovely photographs, graphic designs or artworks, any image that you think best represents this blog, "Mom-Friday", as described on my header and introduction (on the top, sidebar).

Anybody can have a chance to win these fab prizes:

1. Personalized JEL Stickers (for the top 3) -- water-proof, laminated finish, choose-your-own character design, and put your name or a child's name. All new design collection not yet available in the market. Stick them anywhere, from your food keepers, personal items, electronics, books, gifts, etc.

Aren't they cute? My boy's stickers are still on these containers after almost 3 years! And now my girl has her own set.  For sure, moms, kids and the kids-at-heart would love to have these! The new collection will be featured here as Mom-Finds once they are available by mid-March, with details for ordering in case you're interested.

2. Winner will also receive one (1) copy of GoodHousekeeping Collector's Edition Cookbook.
If you've been following this blog, you will notice that I am a fan of easy-to-cook dishes and this mini cookbook offers more than a hundred easy recipes! I bought 4 copies last December, kept one for myself and gave the rest as gifts. And the winner will receive the last one.

3. Mystery Prize - for the winner only
I'm feeling generous so I'm still in search of a bonus prize for you, whoever you are, so to be announced next week (",)

4. Bonus - Another bonus in case the winner is from the Philippines, I'll throw in one (1) Gymboree Coupon for 1-hour free gymplay for kids 4 years old and below, at any branch in the country. My girls is a member, my boy was too, and they just love it at Gymboree!

Here are Photo Contest mechanics:

I would appreciate if you can re-size to 910pixels x 300pixels to fit the header size.
