All Out Surf with the Eraserheads

So much from the 90s pop culture, music, and fashion are making a comeback. I became a young adult in that era and I'm one of those who can appreciate the revival of some 90s trends like the grunge look, earthy matte lipsticks, and alternative rock music. And when it comes to Pinoy rock, the Eraserheads tops my list. They became so popular when I was in college and was even touted as the local Beatles of our generation. "Pare Ko", "Ang Huling El Bimbo" and "Ligaya" are just a few of their now iconic songs. Their last stage performance was in 2009, and just recently, SMART was able to bring them back together for a special private performance.

After opening the pack, we chose the right size of ear bud for her. MUZIP conveniently comes with 4 different ear bud sizes. It also came with a plastic clip, but it broke as soon as we tried to attach it.  Well, it didn't really matter coz it's just an extra add-on feature that we can do without.

My husband and kids are the ones who often use earphones when using their gadgets, whether we're at home or traveling.  They each have basic earphones, which came free with when we bought our phones and tablets. Enjoying Deezer Music Streaming with Smart

I've always been a music lover and I enjoy listening to the radio or CD since my schooldays. Okay...I think I dated myself by telling you that, hahahaha! I'll redeem myself by saying that I'm still very much up to date with chart-topping songs in different genres. It's the digital age and truth be told, I have not caught on to using video or music streaming yet. That all changed when I learned about Deezer. It's the premium music streaming service from France and they partnered with wireless services leader Smart, launched last July 9 with a big party, which I obviously missed.

http://smart.com.ph/Deezer

If not for Smart and Deezer, I wouldn't have discovered new tracks, and wouldn't known the titles of the latest songs that my kids and I are humming to! Good riddance, "Let It Go"!

“We are very happy to secure this partnership with Deezer,” said Kathy Carag, Smart Postpaid Marketing Head. “We have brought you SPINNR and now Deezer to beef up our music portfolio. We know that music is life for many Filipinos and now Smart is making it possible for Filipino music lovers to enjoy what they want to hear with the clarity and features they truly deserve.”

What's amazing about Deezer:
  • Contains more than 30 million songs in its library
  • Deezer App is available in over 180 countries worldwide
  • Man and machine recommendations - 50 music editors around the world + smart algorithms personalize the recommendations to enjoy and discover more music
  • Music discovery features like Flow, Hear This, Explore
  • Spotlight on local artists
  • Smart-caching on mobile - can play on Offline Mode

I am currently building my Playlist as I add more songs to my Favorite Tracks.

Deezer offers are initially available for Smart Postpaid subscribers through Unlisurf Premium Plans starting at just PhP1,175  a month, bundled with the latest smartphones and unlimited LTE surfing. As an exclusive perk to early subscribersSmart will give Unlisurf Premium Plans a P175 bill rebate for six months.

Fun Friday: What's Your Favorite Childhood Hobby?

Third Friday of the month:  Hobbies / Recreation

I've been de-cluttering some parts of the house lately and in the process, I've unearthed so many of my old stuff which I brought with me after I got married.  I'm not so much of a pack rat, but rather more on sentimental, especially with things that reminded me of my younger years, who I was, what I did, what I liked then.  These hobbies really helped define who I am today, and how I influenced my children with their own interests.

Kindermusik (Philippines) Classes & Scholarships with Teacher Suzette

2011 recipient of the Maestro Producer Award and the Maestro in Outreach Award, Suzette Yu - Kho is the first Filipina to be recognized by Kindermusik International for outreach work.  Kindermusik with Teacher Suzette and Friends is ranked among the top 5% of Kindermusik programs worldwide.

I first learned about Kindermusik when my boy was in preschool. They offered the supplemental program 'ABC Music & Me' for building early literacy and language skills through music, conducted by a licensed teacher.  I loved how the program enhanced listening and communication skills, promoted camaraderie, respect and compassion for others, and simple life lessons that children his age can relate to. It was such an enriching experience for my little boy, and for me too.

Not so long ago, I discovered that my classmate in elementary is a certified Kindermusik Maestro! Suzette is a proud mom of two boys and was running a daycare and kiddie salon before she became a Kindermusik educator. So, allow me to introduce Teacher Suzette as she shares with us how Kindermusik helps in the development of infants and kids up to 7 years of age, what programs they offer, and her passion and advocacies in teaching which I find to be truly admirable.

Teacher Suzette Kho
"Kindermusik has always been an advocacy for me.  I believe that education and programs such as Kindermusik should be within reach of parents from all social classes and for children with special needs. This is why I started a scholarship program in 2007.  I became the first Filipina to receive the Ruth Anderson grant from the U.S., allowing Kindermusik International to recognize my outreach work.
When I see that an enrolled family has more than two children already, I automatically offer a scholarship for the third child, no questions asked.  I want families to experience the program without the financial burden.  I believe that Kindermusik is so beautiful that every child should be given the opportunity to be a student.
Unlike other child programs focusing only on the kinesthetic development of the child, Kindermusik aims to enhance the 6 domains of child development:  physical, social, emotional, language, cognitive and musical aspects."
Parents and teacher on the floor with kids and their instruments
All educators are well-trained and are required to be updated on professional development knowledge and skills in order to maintain their licenses. Teacher Suzette tend to hire educators who are mothers themselves as their personal experience allows them to better understand the journey of parenthood and the needs of other parents.
Happy students with Stephanie Pe - Perez, a co-teacher
Kindermusik's 4 core curricula:
  1. Village (newborns to 1.6 y.o.) : Includes infant massage, bi-lateral/cross lateral exercises, circle dances, vestibular stimulation, vocal plays, age-appropriate instrument exploration. Promotes bonding time with parents.
  2. Our Time (1.6 to 3 y.o.) : Has a lot of movement, lap bounces, more chants and rhymes; ehancing speech and movement coordination, as well as improving your child's vocabulary.  As proven by Northwestern University, the activities in 'Our Time' greatly affect your child's reading skills by third grade.
  3. Imagine That! (3 to 5 y.o.) : Imagination and mathematics are seamlessly included in the program, delving into one-to-one correspondence. Want your child to learn a new language more quickly?  This unit is excellent with working on intonations and pitch range.
  4. Young Child (5 to 7 y.o.) : Teaching notes and musical notations in a fun way. Children are encouraged to compose their own songs. In Semesters 1 and 2, program focus on a percussion instrument called a glockenspiel.  In Semester 3, there's a dulcimer which is a string instrument. Semester 4, the children are taught a wind instrument called a recorder.
All core curricula includes imported take-home materials so learning can be continued at home.

TOMATIS Method: Not Only for ADHD, Speech Delay and SPD

Second Friday of the month:  Family / Kids / Health

Having the ability to hear does not mean you can listen.  Listening is voluntary.  When you can listen, you can learn better.
  • Fidgety
  • Lacks focus
  • Easily distracted
  • Sensitive to certain sounds
  • Frequent need for repetition
  • Clumsy and uncoordinated
  • Seeks certain tactile sensations
These adjectives may well describe any active child, or adult. Among other things, these words apply to my personable young boy.  If you see him, you'd say he's just like any typical active growing boy, BUT with some quirks that you just can't seem to point your finger at.

After consulting with developmental pediatricians, doing my own research online and reading up on several books, we have come to the conclusion that these behavioral manifestations are consistent with having Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Aside from the above checklist, he also experienced difficulty organizing sensory inputs around him, sort of having "sensory overload".  Since he can't filter through these stimuli, it causes him to lack focus, shut-out certain sounds and verbal instructions, or he just gets too excited at times. As a result, these caused so much stress and challenges in the classroom. Often, when you're talking to him, you'd literally feel like you're talking to a wall!

So where does Tomatis come into the picture?

While I was doing research about SPD and appropriate intervention programs, I came across Alfred Tomatis, Mozart music, and auditory integration and stimulation.  I knew a listening program like Tomatis would help with my son's challenges and so I read up about the methods further and was thoroughly impressed.  But at that time, Tomatis was not yet offered here.

Standard headphones connected to the patented Tomatis audio machine -- the "electronic ear"
What is Tomatis?
Tomatis Method is an auditory stimulation program that is non-invasive, drug-free and involves no tutoring or teaching.  It was developed by Dr. Alfred Tomatis, a French ear-nose-throat specialist, who discovered that listening problems are the root cause of many learning disabilities.  The Tomatis program was designed to "re-awaken" the ear's natural ability to listen and stimulate the brain's desire to communicate.
Guiding principle: “Good learners are good listeners".

Good learners...
  • Have discriminating ears that can easily distinguish between the various frequencies that make up speech
  • Are right ear dominant -- many poor learners are left ear dominant
  • Can zoom-in on sounds that are important, and filter out irrelevant information -- many poor learners, especially those that are hyperactive, can not easily filter out irrelevant information.
  • Have ears that capture finer frequencies of the spectrum
What problems can Tomatis Method address?

The Tomatis Method can help children with:
  • ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)

  •

Autism, PDD-NOS, ASD

  •

Asperger's Syndrome

  •

Dyslexia and Dyspraxia

  •

Speech and Communication Disorders

  •

SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder)

It has been found effective in:
  • Improving receptive and expressive communication

  •

Increasing attention and concentration skills

  •

Reviving the desire to communcate

  •

Better awareness and focus

  •

Lessening sensory integration issues

  •

Improving motor skills

Fast forward to 2010.  We were given the opportunity to try the Tomatis Method for my son and I want to share our experience here. I don't want to go into further detail about the method and the program since everything you need to know about it is here at Tomatis Philippines's official website.

My boy was already starting first grade when we began the basic program with Tomatis. Going to "big school" requires him to adapt to a completely different environment and rules. Listening attentively and keeping still have been a main issue for him. So I thought he'd need all the support he could get to cope with the challenges in school life.

Listening assessment, before and after each phase of the program
Our 60-hour Tomatis Listening Program - 3 phases of 20 hours (2 hours/day for 10 days)
  •

Listening assessment was conducted together with personal interviews before we began

  •

Listening test results - my son was clearly left-ear dominant, w

hich takes longer for him to process and respond to verbal instructions and what he hears

  •

He gets easily distracted and still lacks eye-contact when spoken to

  •

He has difficulty calming himself down after he gets stimulated or excited

  •

Good concentration with table top activities like drawing

His condition was not very bad to begin with, so expectations were set to a minimum.  For me, that's a good sign since we already "invested"years of occupational therapy (OT) for early intervention.  Tomatis would prove to be a great complimentary program to his OT and we welcome any form of improvement.

The 2-hour listening therapy was a form of relaxation and "down time" for him.
At first, he didn't like the long hours but as soon as we get to the center, he was more than willing to put on the headphones and listen to the classical music by Mozart and Gregorian Chants, which he really enjoys and appreciates.

During each session, he engages in floor activities and drawing, and plays with manipulative toys. At times he will be with one or two other children. Kids are even encouraged to take naps! The center is intended as a "no stress zone", even for the moms who accompany the child.
My boy during one of his listening sessions at Tomatis
At the end of the whole program, the results came with a fairly good percentage of improvement with test results showing that my boy's listening more with his right ear!

Other positive observations:
  • Better, uninterrupted sleep patterns -- which can also be expected when one goes through the program
  • Better eye-contact when responding
  • Less sensitive to certain sounds
  • Less repetition when calling his attention
  • Can focus better even with some distractions
  • Can calm himself faster after an exciting activity
After my last meeting and interview, I had the chance to meet with all the ladies behind Tomatis Philippines.  I was satisfied with how the program helped my son and I thought I'd share my experience with other moms as well.  So a few weeks ago, with my fellow mom bloggers, we were warmly welcomed by these hardworking and dedicated moms from Tomatis Phils. who gave us a chance to visit their center and to learn more about this amazing listening program.

Tomatis Philippines is the first with centers in the whole of Asia and these ladies are all certified to conduct listening assessments on children and adults under the Tomatis Method.  Meet the women behind Tomatis Philippines:  Ria Vecin, Joanne Pedrosa, and Gem Mañosa.

The beauty about the Tomatis Method is that there are also standard programs for pregnant women, school kids and elderly people.  The 30-hour programs are:
Brain Gain - for school kids with no diagnosed disorders but need to improve on their listening skills and focus
Bellies and Babies - for pregnant women, this program produces an alert, relaxed and physically toned baby as well as calming the mother for ease of delivery
Nifty After 50 - for senior citizens who need increased energy and vitality, improved attention, concentration, and memory
Check out these photos during our very educational visit.
