2019 Philippine Childhood Immunization Schedule

I have just received this email about the latest immunization schedule and thought it would be best to share this information as is. In my almost 10 years of blogging, I've shied away from posting random press releases sent my way. But this time, I am making an exception so parents like me can be guided when it comes to vaccination and disease prevention. My kids have both followed their immunization scheds as recommended by their pedia, and we will continue to go for their follow-up vaccines in the coming years. Hope the information below will be helpful for your family.

The 2019 Childhood Immunization Schedule for the Philippines, which indicates the recommended vaccines for children and adolescents, has been released with a recommended indication for measles vaccine for infants as young as 6 months of age.

The annual schedule is developed by the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP) together with the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination (PFV).

Similar to last year, the schedule contains 13 vaccinations that Filipino children need, including:
  • Anti-tuberculosis Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)
  • Hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) given to children right after birth
Both the HBV and BCG, to be given from age 0 to 18 years, are included in the National Immunization Program (NIP), which identifies vaccines that are available for free at health centers.

The Childhood Immunization Schedule also covers vaccines that can protect children from infections and diseases such as:
  • diphtheria
  • tetanus
  • pertussis
  • hepatitis B
  • haemophilus influenzae type B
  • polio
  • pneumococcal infections
  • rotavirus infections
  • influenza
  • measles
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • mumps
  • rubella
  • chickenpox
  • hepatitis A
  • human papillomavirus (HPV)
Given the measles outbreak nationwide, however, pediatricians now recommend that the first measles vaccine be administered at six months old. Measles vaccines are usually given to infants at nine months old, but they can be given as early as six months of age in cases of outbreaks.

The PPS and PIDSP also reminded parents that vaccination is a safe and scientifically proven way of fighting deadly and infectious diseases. During PIDSP’s 26th annual convention held last February 21, the doctors launched the “Save The Future” movement to restore the public’s confidence and trust in vaccination, alongside the release of the national childhood immunization schedule.

“Vaccinating our children is one of the most basic medical interventions to ensure that our children develop as healthy adults. Some fears and myths persist that vaccines could harm infants, but decades of studies have shown that vaccines prevent unnecessary child deaths instead of causing them,” said PIDSP president Dr. Anna Lisa T. Ong-Lim.

PPS President Dr. Salvacion Gatchalian also emphasized the need for collaboration between parents and doctors.

“While the Childhood Immunization Schedule contains our ideal vaccination routine, we acknowledge that some patients will require schedules that are different from our recommendations,” said Dr. Gatchalian. “That is why it is important for parents to consult their pediatricians so they can make the best possible decisions for the health and well-being of their children.”

Family Friday: Dealing with Scoliosis

Around June or July, my husband was playfully massaging and tickling the boy and was surprised to feel a curve along his spine. We never noticed it before and when I checked, there was indeed a curve to the right. We suspected it to be scoliosis. He never had any complaints with his back or spine so I overlooked it for months. When I had my 3D mammogram and bone densitomerty last October, I remembered his spine and inquired about a scoliosis checkup. Eventually, we consulted a doctor and he was diagnosed with scoliosis. He recommended an x-ray immediately.

How We Can Be a Wall Against Dengue

I have relatives and friends who suffered from dengue and were hospitalized. I can only imagine how scary and traumatic it was for their loved ones. It is something I pray will never happen to me and my family. To be honest, I'm still not that familiar with the symptoms and effects of this disease. As a parent, I know it is my responsibility to educate myself and take necessary preventive measures to protect us. Recently, I agreed to take part in an advocacy to raise awareness against the disease because dengue cases in the Philippines continue to rise in recent years. As one of the moms against dengue, I will share as much information as I can so all of us can be a wall against dengue.

What To Expect from Body Densitometry and 3D Mammography at Health Cube

Second Friday of the month: Health / Wellness

Health is wealth. It's been said a gazillion times, but it's true. As a mom, I have to stay fit and healthy to be able to take care of my family's welfare. I must admit, hindi ako regular sa annual check-ups and lab tests, and I've never undergone mammography or bone scan, ever. I didn't feel the need then. But having friends and relatives who are cancer survivors, and a few who succumbed, I know I have to take preventive measures and self-checks, aside from eating right. So, when I was offered to take the Body Densitometry and 3D Mammography at Health Cube, I immediately said yes, kahit medyo kabado ako coz I am clueless about the procedures. I'm sharing my experience here so you if you're a "newbie" to these tests like me, you'll know what to expect. Plus, there's a giveaway at the end of this feature!

Family Friday: Poop Problems

Second Friday of the month:  Health / Wellness

I don't know what other term to use, so excuse the title if it sounds iffy to you. =) This post is really all about what my girl has been going through for the past two months. She's been very emotional every time she experiences abdominal pains. She wants it to go away. We all do.  She's been though a lot during the past few weeks and most nights, she wants to sleep with us in our bed. The pains and discomfort are affecting not just her health, but also her studies, her sleep patterns, her diet, our day-to-day activities and weekend plans, not to mention my own health coz I also cannot sleep soundly when she can't sleep at night.

Family Friday: Diet and Food Intolerance Testing

Second Friday of the month:  Family  / Health / Nutrition

“What is food to one man may be fierce poison to another.” - Titus Lucretius Carus

That quote was from the presentation during the Hi-Precision Diagnostics luncheon which I attended recently. There, I discovered I'm intolerant to many types of food that I regularly consume, thanks to the Food Intolerance Test I took last month. Time for some major adjustments in my food choices.  It's not gonna be easy. So, what is this test all about?

Would You Pee Standing Up?

If you're a guy reading this, you don't even have to answer my question/title.
So to the ladies, would you? :)))

I was not in a blogging mood the past few days, and while scanning through my photo folders to find inspiration, I found these pictures I took from my cell phone last January:
