My Mom-Friday Slum Book: Getting to Know YOU

Freestyle Friday:  Blog / Readers / Random

January 2014 has five Fridays, which means I get to post all my Friday categories this first month of the year, yehey!!! Today is the fourth Friday (the "last Friday" Mom-Finds will be for next week), so it's Freestyle Friday - anything goes, no assigned topic.

Since it's the start of the year, I'd really want to take this chance to know more about my readers for a change. My blog is turning 5 this coming May, and in all those years, I can't recall dedicating a post just to ask questions about you. This time, please indulge me with this Q&A to get to know YOU, to help me make this blog better and more interesting for you this year and in the years to come.

On the sidebar, you'll see my most popular posts - a nice mix of food, parenting, and recreation features.  I like knowing what topics people search for and enjoy reading here.  So, what else did you like from the blog?

If you grew up in my generation, the slum book / slam book is the coolest way to know more about our friends and classmates, even teachers!  It's like a bio, trivia, scrapbook, all in one cute compact notebook or journal.

Now, it's your turn.
Tell me as little or as many info as you like.  Feel free to add or subtract from the list of questions below.  Ask me questions too, if you like. =)

Family Friday: Midlife and Me

Second Friday of the month: Home Life / Me

Okaaayyy.... my mind is blank.
I'll just type as thoughts flow through my head today.  Or is this a sign of memory loss? Hehe...  You see, tomorrow (March 9) I'll be 40.  There's really some weird feeling as I look at that number, LOL!!!  As my friends would say, what matters is how old (young) you feel despite the age.  Hence, I've psyched myself for the past decade that I am forever 28.  Walang ko-kontra (no objections, please)!  =)

I was born on a Friday, four decades ago.  So, today could very well be my birthday.  Remind me to update my 'WHO' page.

I am happy with my domesticated life.  But that doesn't mean I don't want more.  As I hit mid-life, priorities have changed, more goals, bigger dreams... for myself and for my family.  There are just so many things I need to assess and reflect on.  That's something I had to do in my quiet time, whenever I can find some.

You know, one thing I realized is that I developed this mentality of "so what, who cares".  I hate to admit it, but I got that line from an early episode of the Tyra Banks show.  It stuck with me.  But it does make sense, don't you agree? I used to be conscious about what others think and feel, and the desire to please, to go with the flow, the pressure to belong.  This time, with age (okay, that's acceptance right there), I learned to care less - not about the people, but more with the situation I get myself into.  It's not easy, but it's a good thing.  It helps me to be honest about myself, to simplify my life... and it actually feels liberating!  Of course, there will always be frustrations in between, but no room for regret.  I just have to accept things and learn to move forward.

I'm a scatter-brain right now, so I hope I'm still making sense at this point.  We don't even have definite plans for tomorrow yet!

Back to the blog... for almost four years now, this site has been a happy place for me.  If you've been following me since 2009, you may have noticed that I rarely talk about myself here.  That's just not me.  I am not comfortable spilling my guts out for public consumption.  I still want to maintain some level of anonymity (or mystery?) and privacy.  Okay...this gave me an idea just now. Continue reading after the horoscope.

Just for this post, I am giving everyone a chance to get to know me a little bit more, by doing a "20 Questions" type of game.

How it works:
Anyone can ask me one (1) question, answerable only by a YES, a NO, or GUESS (for answers I'm not ready or not willing to share, again, for privacy reasons).  (",)

Ask me anything you like, from the serious to the mundane.  I just hope you are at least curious enough to participate, before enjoying the rest of your weekend.

Let's do this!

Why Wear the Wedding Ring on the Fourth Finger?

My husband always says I have a lot of "useless information" stored inside my head every time I blurt out some random answers, trivial facts or information. Important things I forget, trivial things I remember.  Go figure! Even my friends ask me (in amusement, I hope!) where I get those tidbits of info that I occasionally blurt out mid-conversation.  My answer is, I don't know! I really don't.  I like trivia.  I read up on what interests me, and maybe they just stay dormant in my memory until needed. =)

Anyway, here's another trivia I got from my Inbox and I thought it would be interesting enough to share here. Though I'm pretty sure many of you might have received this already, or have read it somewhere, feel free to skip this post and read more interesting wedding-related posts here.

I am re-posting the exact content of the email, and the image below. I don't know the origin of the text and photo so I cannot credit them to anyone.

Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger?
There is a beautiful and convincing explanation given by the Chinese:

Your thumb represents your Parents

Your index finger represents your Siblings
Your middle finger represents yourself
Your ring finger represents your Life Partner

Your last (pinkie) finger represents your Children

Firstly, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers and hold them together -- back to back. Then open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb tip to tip.  As shown in the below:

Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing your parents) if they will open - because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong and have to leave you sooner or later.

Please join your thumbs as before and separate your index fingers (representing your siblings) they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have their own families and will have to lead their own separate lives.
Now, join the index fingers and separate your little fingers (representing your children) they will open too, because the children also will get married and settle down on their own someday.
Finally, join your little fingers and try to separate your ring fingers (representing your spouse).
You will be surprised to see that you just CANNOT, because husband and wife have to remain together all their lives -- through thick and thin!

I'm sure you're trying it as you read this. (",)  Were you able to separate the ring fingers? Do you believe this is a good explanation?

I've tried doing this several times in the past as a hand trick, without knowing there's a possible "meaning" behind it. I was able to separate my ring fingers just very slightly for a few seconds. Maybe because I dropped my elbows a bit. I can tell you it really is almost impossible to separate them unless to bring your wrists closer together that your fingers will naturally open up and separate easily.

Do you know another story behind the ring finger? Share your trivia here. =)

p.s. Thanks to reader Czjai for reminding me about the more rational reason behind the ring finger -- how could I forget this:  the ring finger is where the vein connects to the heart, ergo, the best finger for the wedding ring
I was simply amazed by the philosophical reason above :)))

25 Random Things About Mom-Friday

Second Friday of the month:  Family / Personal Life

May is My Mom-Friday's blog anniversary month and I really did not plan on anything fancy this year. This humble blog of mine turned 3 years old last May 9.

After hitting a roadblock a couple weeks ago, I decided to check on my photos and browse old posts to get inspiration for today's entry. If you notice, I don't really post much photos of myself nor do I share personal stuff about me on the blog. I'm just not the type. So, to shake things up a bit, and as part of my blog anniversary, here's something that I thought you may like, or want (or wouldn't have wanted, hehe) to know. I've been meaning to re-post this old list, which I thought was gone forever after I deleted it from my Facebook Notes where I first wrote it, and from this blog.
Yes, it was published here already. Confused? Read on...
