Last Friday of the month:  Mom-Finds / Faves

Today is the last Friday of 2012, and once again, this will be a year-end review of my favorite finds.  I stared this round-up last year, so from here on, I will try do this as my last Mom-Finds post every year.

With so many good finds this year, I actually did two "current favorite things" features here and here.  It was so hard to narrow down my list for this year-ender, but here it goes, in no particular order, starting with my latest find.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas!

CHRISTMAS 2012

There's always a first time to be silly.  I believe this is my very first humour post, thanks to the photo up there, and so I hope you won't stop following my blog because of this crazy moment I had! =)

I was supposed to take a portrait of the kids with their santa hats on and I thought why not borrow one and take this shot instead!  I have no plans of writing a lengthy post today and didn't have a decent Christmas image I can share here that I haven't used already.  This was last year's.

All I know is that I wanted to make you all smile today, at the very least, and send my warmest holiday greetings to all of you.

It's been a crazy month at the homefront, and for me as a blogger too!  I just want to take it easy this week and enjoy the Christmas break with my loved ones.  I'll still be posting photos all over my social network (you know I'm a pathological-picture taker, right?) so you won't miss me, heehee...

From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all a truly blessed and meaningful yuletide season!
Have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!
From Mom-Friday and family

Another week and it's gonna be 2013... I'm not ready!!! Are you?

Fun Friday: Easy Gift Wrapping Ideas

I know this post is a bit late already since Christmas is just a few days away and I'm sure most of you have wrapped your presents already, if not gave them away.  Still, I am sharing this with you because we all wrap gifts the whole year round and hopefully, you haven't done some of these yet! =)

Gift-wrapping is one of the more relaxing and fun things to do, for me at least.  Even wrapping books in plastic is quite therapeutic!  I know I'm not alone in that department.

Anyway, when it comes to gifts, if I don't have the store wrap them for me, I use whatever appropriate materials available at home.  I always have assorted wrappers and paper gift bags in stock but sometimes, I don't have that perfect cut or size to wrap a present.

This post will be all about simple and easy-to-do, no-frills wrapping.  There are so many fantastic and over-the-top creations out there, but time is not something I have a lot of during the holidays.  Crafty projects can be tedious, therefore time-consuming.  With too many Christmas gifts to wrap (and I am the only one who does them), I just try to make things simple yet still very presentable.  This year, I think I wrapped almost 100 items in just a few days, over a period of 2 weeks!

The Gift Bag
Here's another way of tying a ribbon on your gift bag - vertically, passing through the handle and over to one side. Some friends who saw this on Instagram liked the idea so I thought I'd share it on the blog... sorry I did not get to do this blog post sooner!

I had two items that would have been perfect when boxed, then wrapped.  But I had none at that time.  Next best thing was to use this last piece of plain kraft paper bag I had.  After rummaging through my box of left over ribbons, this happened.  A wider ribbon would look better though.

This style is universal and can work with all kinds of gifts.  Whether for a small or large bag, just use different types of ribbons to match the occasion and recipient.  When the ribbon is too short, I just tie it around one side of the handles.

The Candy Roll

Sometimes, boxes can be boring when used for wrapping soft items, like clothes, towels, etc.  If the occasion is not formal, I just roll the gift and tie each end to look like candy.

This technique works best with thinner paper or cloth-like materials.  Even old scarves and handkerchief would be perfect for this type of wrapping!  Cylindrical items can also be wrapped this way, as long as it's not breakable.

You can use craft scissors, zigzag or scallop, to trim the edge of the paper for a more decorative look.  Just make sure the ends are a bit longer that the diameter of the the roll so you can tie it securely with a ribbon.  I once tied a criss-cross over and under the roll, from top to bottom, using yarn.

The Bottle Neck
For irregular shaped items, like bottles and tubes, this is how I quickly wrap them.  The top end should be extended long enough to conceal the item, unless you want the tip of a bottle to show.

Roll and secure the bottom with tape, then tie the neck with a ribbon. Also ideal for round or cylindrical items like vases, jars, and candles .  Add an extra touch with a flower clip or big bow, or make ribbons long and curly.

The Band
This is one of my favorite wrapping ideas.  It's a clean and simple look that makes use of excess wrappers.  You can use colorful printed paper as a band or sleeve around gifts.  Best used with plain wrapping paper for a contrasting effect.  Print on print can work well too if you can find complimentary prints and colors.

The paper band is a great alternative to bows and ribbons, cheaper too.  Sometimes, I intentionally use whole printed wrappers and cut them to strips, and highlight their design against a plain background, like this kraft paper.  I even used felt paper and cartolina before.  Put a band on any form of gifts - from boxed to candy roll, and even around a gift bag above, instead of a ribbon!

Do you have other creative, no-frills wrapping ideas?
Hope you have fun gift-wrapping!  Happy holidays!

Beauty & Butter Salon Day with the SoMoms

I consider myself very blessed lately because of the pampering and beautifying treats I've been enjoying.  God knows I need them all especially now that I am hitting the big 4-0 in a few months!

A month ago, I was at my first sparty.  Then, a week after that, another mani-pedi session was scheduled, where I met up with some of the SoMoms, courtesy of Beauty & Butter Nail and Face Salon.  I was one lucky happy mommy! =)

Scent of the Moment: DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom

Delicate. Sweet. Fresh florals.

That's how I would describe this current scent I am wearing from DKNY Be Delicious Eau So Intense fragrance line.
SRP @ PhP 3,600 / 50ml

"An intense new take on the DKNY Delicious Fresh Blossom fragrance that marries freshness, vibrancy, and femininity.
All the things you love about Fresh Blossom is now intensified in an irresistibly seductive scent."
- DKNY.com

Another wonderful gift from Aramis and Designer Fragrances (ADF), DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom Eau So Intense has notes of rose and lily of the valley that's formulated with a "more textural, intense floral bouquet that is long lasting and fresh."

Be Delicious, Fresh Blossom, Golden Delicious Eau So Intense line

There are two other variants I have not smelled yet but I heard each one is intensely "delicious" with fruity and elegant scents that will surely appeal to our different personalities and preferences.  Their gift sets make fantastic holiday presents too!
Holiday gift set: Fresh Blossom EDP Spray 50ml + Body Lotion 100ml

I am not so picky when it comes to fragrances.  I'll wear it as long as they are fresh, light, with a hint of floral or citrus notes, can be powdery or warm like vanilla - which is why I also love DNKY Pure Vanilla

At first, I found it difficult to spray, pressing on the top of this round bottle.  While I struggled to spritz on my nape, I think I sprayed too much the first time and found it too strong for my senses.  I then realized a little goes a long way! It really lives up to it being "Eau So Intense"!

DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom Eau So Intense is now growing on me since it smells lighter during the day when I wear it.  It's a fine, happy floral scent I can wear everyday.

Family Friday: Me and My Vanity

Second Friday of the month:  Motherhood / Beauty / Wellness

Me and my vanity.
If I'm going to rate my level of vanity from 1 to 10, I'd say I'm a 6.  I guess I'm really not that vain, and people who know me can attest to that.  But the words rhyme, and they definitely sound better than "Me and My Aging Skin", don't you agree?! =)  Hence, the title.  So, what am I driving at?  I am getting old! Waaahhhh...

This is me, today - lines, pores, blemishes and dark circles in full glory. No make-up, no image filter, no effects nor retouching.  But don't get me wrong -- I am quite pleased with how this shot came out since it's been two weeks after my facial treatments yet no flaking or visible dryness.  Still, I wouldn't dare plaster an enlarged close-up shot of my bare face here.  Half would suffice. :p

Maliwanag ang Pasko for Island Schools

"Light up your homes and show the world that the nation is moving as one, towards a brighter tomorrow."

That line was part of the script I wrote for a TV ad over a decade ago.  It was a corporate holiday greeting to highlight the progress of the country during that period of economic growth.  When I was tapped to do this feature for Meralco's Maliwanag ang Pasko, I immediately remembered that specific line and thought it is still very relevant, no?

Image from Meralco website

To tell you the truth, I was not aware about the thrust of this lighting project until now.  Learning about their charitable cause gave me a better appreciation of Meralco's annual Christmas program which was launched in 2006.  This year, Meralco's Maliwanag ang Pasko campaign has a 3-pronged approach to make Christmas even brighter and more fun:

  1. Liwanag Parks - Meralco has tied up with the Department of Tourism to help promote the Philippines as a Christmas destination (since our country has the longest Christmas celebration) by creating more Liwanag Parks in and around the Greater Manila Area.
  2. Liwanag raffle - Meralco customers like me have a chance to win PhP 5,000 daily! Simply upload photos of your lighted homes or any of the Liwanag Parks to www.facebook.com/meralco until December 22.
  3. School Electrification - By supporting this program, we will help energize island schools to benefit more children and communities around the country.
Have you ever experienced studying or reading in the dark?
I did a few times, during power outages when I was still a student, and also while I was tutoring my son.  It sucks.  I knew it was just temporary, but it was very difficult to accomplish anything.  The sad reality is there are still areas in the country that live in "darkness" in this day and age.

We all need light. We need power.  Electricity is essential for us to keep up with the rest of the word, and thankfully, Meralco's Maliwanag ang Pasko initiative is energizing one school at a time, helping communities every year.

Every holiday season, I try to find gifts that family and friends can appreciate -- either things they can use on themselves, or for their homes.  If I can't find something appropriate, or for friends who already have everything, my safe bets are delicious, sweet and savory food, and healthy beverages... like Tipco!

This year is no different, and I've come to trust my friends from TransAxion Unltd. Corp, exclusive distributor of leading health juice brand TIPCO 100% Juice, to come out with their annual gift boxes filled with an assortment of imported goodies that I would love to receive myself!

If you're still looking for great gifts for your relatives, neighbors, ninongs and ninangs (godparents), your officemates or boss, or to whoever can appreciate good food, search no more and consider these fantastic gift boxes to suit your budget.

If you get the medium and large gift boxes, they also contain our favorite Bissin Wafers, and my latest coffee craving, Owl brand of flavored coffee mixes.

I already ordered a dozen medium boxes -- 1 out, 11 more to dispatch! Busy days ahead... two more weeks to go before Christmas!

For orders, send them a message here at Tipco Juice Philippines' Facebook Page.

10 Years After 'I Do'...

“I have found the one my heart loves.”
Song of Songs 3:4

It was 10 years ago today that I walked down this aisle on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to marry J.

10 years (and 2 kids) today.  I'm stumped.
Wow.  For the first time, I really don't know what to share with you today! =)  I have been pondering about what to write for the past few weeks now but still blank.  I'll just type away and hope I make sense.

I actually planned on adding a lesson learned every year but I skipped writing about our anniversary last year 'cause I can't think of anything new or exciting to share.  And I believe I've written enough with my 7th and 8th anniversary posts, which I hope you can read first (if you haven't yet) to get a better idea of what I am taking about:

7 Random Things I've Learned
8th Random Thing I've Learned

I'm not sweet and mushy and I can't stand PDA, so please don't expect me to write a love letter here or send out a message to J, heehee...  Besides, it's OUR anniversary, so the well-wishes should be for both of us, right?  =)

I just wanted to say Thank You -- thank you to God and to the forces of the universe for bringing us together, for blessing us with two beautiful children, and everything that we are enjoying right now.  It was never easy, but it's been a good and solid 10 years.  I am still struggling as a wife, and mother.  There are old habits to break, and new ones to form.  I pray for inner strength and wisdom -- for me and J, for us to be a better spouse to each other.

That's it.  I'm signing out for now.  We're going on a stay-cation this weekend... with the kids!

Are you married?  Care to share what you've learned?
Let's compare notes and leave me some feedback. =)

Mom-Finds: A Few of My (current) Favorite Things, 2

Fourth Friday of the month:  Freestyle Friday / Finds / Shopping

It's not supposed to be Mom-Finds yet coz there are 5 Fridays this month, and the last Friday is the 30th.  Today should be Freestyle Friday, anything goes.  But next week is a special day, it's my wedding anniversary, so I think I want to blog something different for that day.  Anyhow, since it's anything goes, I am doing this compilation of good finds again, just like what I did here the first time.

I have discovered and received so many wonderful products over the past few months and they all deserve to be shared here.  These four stood out.  So, without further ado, in no particular order, here are a few of my current favorite things:

PALMER'S - Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil
When I attended a talk on skin care and pregnancy by Palmer's some months back, I received this wonderful gift from Rustan's.  I've been using this all over my body for three months now, after every bath, and I swear by this product!

I needed to change to more intensive moisturizing cleansers and creams so I found this light oil more effective to soothe my dry, and sometimes scaly and itchy, skin.  The Skin Therapy Oil is available locally through Rustan's for less than PhP700.  What makes this so special?
  • Advanced multi-purpose skin perfection product for the body and face!
  • Preservative-free, phthalate-free
  • Non-greasy, non-staining, lightweight formula
  • With Vitamin E and mild rosehip fragrance
  • Formulated to help improve appearance of scars, stretch marks, dry and damaged skin, uneven skin tone, aging skin, fine lines and wrinkles
My skin really looks and feels instantly soft and smooth.  Same goes for their rich Olive Butter Formula Concentrated Cream which I use specifically on my elbows, knees, and heels after I slather on the Skin Therapy Oil.  That's double moisturizing for me! :)   I am a Palmer's fan every since I was pregnant with my eldest (that was almost 10 years ago) and even ordered a their Firming Lotion from abroad.  I'm glad Palmer's added products that are not just for pregnancy skin care.

TOPSHOP - Studded Black Ballerina Flats

I've been buying ballet flats for as long as I can remember.  I am taller that your average Filipino so I'm cool with flats. This latest trend with studs on accessories and bags have found their way on these ultra soft black pair from TopShop.  It's also available in cream.  I posted that shot on Instagram soon after I bought it from the store.  It was the last pair in my size.  I guess it's meant to be mine! =)
PhP 1,800+

Full soles are stitched all around, and the whole shoe is as light as you can imagine.  You won't feel there are studs attached on it.  There's no arch support and foot padding though, so it's not ideal for hours of walking.  But I can wear them everyday with my usual rounds.

SHU UEMURA - Rouge Unlimited Lipstick BR790

I love red lipsticks.  It's all I need to instantly brighten up my face, enough for me not to put on any other makeup on top of face powder.  When I was still working, I had several shades from brights to darks tones.  After I stopped working, I've been used to just wearing lip shimmers everyday.  It's been more than a decade since I bought a good red lipstick!  It's about time I get one.

With rave reviews from friends, Shu Uemura was the logical choice for me.  I finally got to try the different shades and decided on this deep brown-red color.  I decided on Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited in BR790.  It's rich and high-pigment colour and double moisture system truly delivers with long-lasting color on my lips the whole day, without drying and flaking.  It actually lends a deeper color than what you see on the photo above.  I'm acidic so it eventually turns brighter.  If I don't feel like wearing it dark, I just press my lips on a tissue for a more muted shade (right photo).
PhP 1,195

BIG BAG THEORY - Market Bag
"Dark blue denim; sage green water-proof lining with inner pocket; vegetable-tanned tooling leather handle; antique rivets" -- this is how my friend from the Big Bag Theory describes this giant tote they recently launched.

As soon as I got it, I posted this shot on Facebook via Instagram and did not expect to receive so many likes and comments!  I called it the "reincarnation of the bayong" - a native Filipino market bag made of woven buri leaves. This roomy carry-all tote is made with durable denim and water-proof lining -- practical, finely crafted, very eco-chic.
PhP 990

I've been using it to hold all sorts of stuff -- from food to clothes, party materials, to toys.
Just to illustrate how big this is, take a look at the market bag's proportion to the objects (and kid!) below.

They have more lining colors to choose from.  Order your own market bag from Big Bag Theory.

All of these things can be nice Christmas presents for the ladies too!
