Freestyle Friday: Hooked on Reformer Pilates at Onelife Studio

Freestyle Friday:  Health and Fitness

We have an extra Friday again this month, so it's Freestyle Friday and anything goes! Today, I'm sharing my new fitness discovery -- Reformer Pilates at Onelife Studio.

It was 1998 when I first heard about pilates. I hit the gym twice a week with my co-workers then and pilates was being offered in the same location as Bramante gym.  All I knew then was that it's a different method of exercise using a unique type of equipment, mainly to stretch and strengthen the body. It did not appeal to us since we saw mostly "older" women, or moms attending the class, hehehehe! Of course, we were younger then and all we wanted to do was weight training exercises to tone our bodies.  And now, it's my turn doing pilates! :p

For the longest time, I've been curious about pilates. I received a few invitations from different fitness centers to attend a free trial class but I just did not put any effort to try them out since I'm juggling a weird schedule. There are several gyms and yoga studios that are conveniently located from where I live, and one of them is Onelife Studio in San Juan which opened last year.  I've been meaning to join my friends for a trial since last year but didn't get the chance to do so. Some of them are already enrolled. Finally, another offer came for me to try their programs for a month and I knew I needed to try. They have pilates classes and it's super near our place. I've decided to give it a go.

Before I got married, my endurance and stamina was at it's peak, thanks to regular visits to the gym and playing badminton. With my age, plus a sedentary lifestyle for the past decade, I tire easily, have body aches here and there, and have low energy level.  I've been experiencing lower back pains for months, maybe years now. It's on and off.  I guess it's due to prolonged sitting and lack of exercise. My friends say pilates will be good for my back. I know I have to start feeling fit and healthy again, not just for myself but more importantly, for my family.

After looking over the classes at Onelife Studio, the Reformer Pilates is my program of choice. This is where it all happens.  The studio is very clean and homey. Check out the reformer machines.

"The reformer assists, and at the same time, challenges you as it tones and stretches you. Great for targeting specific areas that need attention, Pilates on the reformer makes for a great workout."

Reformer Pilates really works out your core.
  • Full body workout
  • Stretches, strengthens, and tones, especially the abs, arms and legs
  • Each class takes 50 minutes (Onelife Studio, San Juan can accommodate 7 students at a time)
Aside from working with the reformer, I also use the mat and the ball for some exercises.  That's me pressing the ball between my thighs. Aray! =)  I'm at the beginner level. The teacher will adjust the level of difficulty as the student progresses.

What to wear/bring:
  • Comfy workout clothes / shirt / tank / leggings
  • Non-skid socks
  • Small towel
  • Water / tumbler (the studio has drinking water for all)
  • Drop-in fee per session is PhP600 (special rates for monthly packages)

This is teacher Chris.  He's the instructor on my first and third session.  Teacher Che taught during my second.  Both are really very encouraging, very competent, friendly and helpful.

I requested a demo so I can show you a few pilates "moves". I don't have any to show you yet. First is the difficult one. You have to remember that the brown board is moving/sliding, so it takes a lot of power, muscle control and body balance to pull that off!

Below is a relatively easier exercise - you have to balance yourself and control as you push back the board. It's a balancing act which I was able to do with hands on my waist, heehehee. =)

I just had my third class yesterday and I'm very pleased to report that I felt significant improvement on how my back feels. Less aches and pains, yahoo! Even after the first session, I only had minimal body aches the day after. Hindi bugbog ang feeling, unlike when I went for a gym workout the first time.  I plan to continue doing Reformer Pilates at least once a week.

Have you tried pilates or reformer pilates? What's your fitness regimen?
Here are several class offerings to choose from at Onelife Studio.
