Mom-Finds: Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer

Last Friday of the month:  Mom-Finds and Raves

After a year of blogging, I just realized I never did a beauty-related post.  And now that I think about it, I was never really into the hair and make-up stuff.  Ever since I started wearing (a little) make-up after college, I've kept my beauty regimen very basic, and the cosmetics at the bare minimum.

During my working years in the 90s, I only had a lipstick craze where I experimented with an assortment of shades from my staple of Revlon ColorStay, Watercolors, Body Shop and MAC matte lipsticks in bold colors among others. Eventually, trends shifted to the natural, barely-there make-up look, so I got into sheer, tinted lip gloss and lip stains. And I think it was three or four years ago that I stumbled upon this fantastic product at popular cosmetics store Beauty Bar. This is not something new but it's worth sharing to all you beautiful women out there.

Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer is my 'BFF' among my limited stash of beauty products. I just got to have my supply of Watermelon lip shimmer. I always pucker up with this smooth moisturizing balm with just the right tinge of pink to brighten up my somewhat sallow skin tone.

I'm very basic when it comes to beautifying. Every time I leave the house, I just lightly apply face powder, curl my lashes, and finally, glide on my lip gloss. These are my top 3 must-haves in my vanity kit, along with a hand sanitizer, pack of facial tissue and cologne of the moment.

Every application of Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer will leave a fresh minty feeling on your lips. Wear it alone or as a base for your favorite lipstick.  It's also a perfect top coat for luscious kissable lips anytime of the day.  This fabulous lip balm also repairs chapped lips while it beautifies.

Burt's Bees is famous for it's lip balms which contain natural ingredients like beeswax, coconut and sunflower oils, and vitamin E to nourish your lips.
"A kiss of color and pearlised shine add a hint of glamour to our world famous lip balm. Condition, smooth and highlight your lips with our wonderful selection of seven shimmering shades. Luminescent earth pigments add a hint of colour to our natural beeswax lip balm to give your lips the lift they need.
Apply shimmer to lips as often as needed or desired. It's good for you. Eat it off. Kiss it off. Talk it off. Re-apply." - Burt's Bees
Choose from a range of colors to suit your every mood -- Raisin, Fig, and Rhubarb are also popular. It comes in a convenient slim tube that easily slides in your pocket or in the tiniest purse.

 @ PhP395 :  Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in Watermelon  (US$3+)

This Watermelon Lip Shimmer is my absolute favorite and I think I'm on my fifth tube. I already have a spare on my vanity, and another shade in Fig. Several Christmases ago I also gave some away as gifts, so consider this for your girl friends too and I'm sure they'll thank you for it.  Try this on and let me know what you think! :)

I'd love to know your thoughts on this post.

The ABC's of Parenting - part 2

A few weeks after publishing part I of this parenting seminar, I was already done with this second part. But by some freakish accident, while editing, I pressed something and the whole article (save for the last 2 slides and intro) was erased! Then Blogger 'Saved' automatically before I can "Undo" and realize what just happened. Aaarrrgh!!! And you know what's worse? ALL the slides from the talk were already trashed during a "clean-up" procedure of my hard disk that same week I was editing!

You can't imagine my frustration. Re-writing was such a chore so this one was sitting in 'Drafts' for the longest time. Honestly, I was hesitant to release this part 2, but I thought it is quite rare to have an opportunity to listen and learn from industry experts. And I owe it to you, my dear readers, that I finish what I started on this presentation by one of the most distinguished child development specialists in the country, held last November (yes, 2009) at my son's preschool.

The first part covered "A to I". As much as I wanted to share the rest of "J to Z" in detail, I have to make do with my notes, with what I've learned, and dig deep into what's left of those valuable info from my now rusty memory of that day. It's now or never. So without further delay, here's part 2 of that very educational talk on parenting:

The A-B-C's of Parenting
Talk and slide presentation by Dr. Francis Xavier Dimalanta, M.D.
General Pediatrics & Child Development Specialist

J
JUST BE HONEST
Being honest with your child teaches them about integrity and respect for truth.
Be open and share your day with them, and make an effort to know how they feel.

For me, this is one of the most important virtues -- the foundation of trust.  With my children, even the smallest excuse would create trust issues for us that would later backfire. It is very difficult to be straightforward with them at all times, but slowly, we are learning how to deal and break it to them gently.

K
KNOW YOUR CHILD
Be an involved parent.
Know where your child is, what he is doing and who is he with.
The doctor stressed the importance of communication and cited that parents should engage their children in conversations.  This will lead to enabling the children make good judgment and decisions in life.

L
LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART
Stop, listen, and get eye to eye with your child.

Listen to what your child wants and what they complain about.  If they feel acknowledged, they will also listen to you. Try to answer their questions appropriately and "interact, don't react".

M
MODEL GOOD BEHAVIOR
Children learn from adults, parents being their primary role models.
Try to create a set of rules for everything, and find positive role models they can emulate.

N
NOT TO EXPECT PERFECTION
Do not make the child feel like a failure.
Take off the pressure to be perfect and provide encouragement in every effort, whether successful or not.

O
OBSERVE AND LEARN
Pay close attention to your child and know when to let go or hold on.

Know how your child interacts with other people, young or old.  By doing so, parents can properly address different situations the child will be involved in.

P
PRAISE YOUR CHILD
Be generous with praises. Be specific.

"Good job!" is okay, "Your stick figure looks cool, great work!" is better. Recognize good behavior and acts of kindness with compliments.

Q
QUESTION YOUR INTENTION
When teaching or reprimanding a child, ask yourself these questions:
Is it done out of love?  Does is prove a point? Does it correct a wrongdoing?

It takes a lot of effort to be very conscious with what I say or do especially when I reprimand my kids. I am guilty of acting, and talking on impulse which I can never take back.  And this have caused some levels of emotional stress on my kids in the past. Everyday is a struggle and a learning process.

R
RESPECT

Parents demand it. But more often, we tend to forget how to show respect for the child's needs, opinions and emotions. Parents also have to earn respect from their children. It's always a two-way street.

The doctor also said, children tend to treat others the way they are being treated a home. An example:  The 'bully' in school is being bullied at home.

RELAX TOGETHER
Allow some "down time" for your and your kids.

S
SET GOALS FOR YOUR CHILD

Discuss realistic expectations with your child, matched with his capabilities, and this will enable him to accomplish the task at hand or work toward a long-term goal.
SMILE

Lift up your spirits. Bring positive energy between you and your child with just a simple smile, everyday.

T
Spend TIME WITH YOUR CHILD
Quantity and quality time are equally important.

The balancing act is difficult. Find what works for your family and stick to the plan.

U
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

There's a (funny) saying that "this is a face only a mother could love".  Whoever or whatever your child will become, parents should express unconditional love for your child.

As every child is unique, learn to adapt parenting skills for each one, especially among siblings.  One valuable lesson I learned from this talk, when it comes to discipline, is to take out the burden from the older child not to "hit" the younger one. Instead, reprimand or remove the smaller one out of the conflict or situation.
V
VALUE TOUCH

Just like a smile each day, holding hands or a warm embrace can express love, assurance, security and comfort without saying a word.

W
WORDS OF AFFIRMATION

Encouraging words of appreciation will boost your child's confidence and self-esteem, knowing that their deeds and actions are being acknowledged. This will motivate them to strive harder and always do better.

X
eXPECT THE BEST

Set high standards to encourage children to give their best in every situation.  Remain positive with whatever outcome and maintain an optimistic attitude.

Y
YOU ARE EVERYTHING to your child

Children look up to their parents as their heroes, especially for the younger ones. Their world revolves around you. It is the parent's responsibility to let the child believe in himself and be the best he can be, knowing you will always be there for him.

However, the doc reminded that being in the center of your child's universe should not hold you down from spending some quiet time with your spouse.  A happy marriage is key to good parenting.

Z
(I totally missed this one, sorry!)

The talk has been an eye-opener and so inspiring for us to be better parents to our children. As I always say, there are no perfect parents, and parenting is a work in progress. I am grateful to our esteemed speaker, as well as to the PTA and DML sisters who organized and hosted the lecture.
Despite the case of the missing slides, I do hope you were able to pick up a thing or two from this concluding part, and, even in a small way, enlighten parents on how to better raise your child.

A Quickie from The Cliff House to Nuvali

Third Friday of the month:  Travel & Leisure

Don't be misled by the title.  This is a family blog, so read on (",)

It was a bright and sunny Mother's Day and the family spent half the day from Tagaytay to Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
The plan was to have a nice and relaxed lunch at Tagaytay, then spend the afternoon at Solenad in Nuvali before driving back home. When I thought about going out of town for this particular Sunday, I was really hoping we could at least have a whiff of that cool Tagaytay breeze and escape the summer heat for a day. I was sooo wrong.

Bedtime Believers Unite

"Sleep is one of the most important factors in releasing growth hormones, most especially for very young babies.  While your baby sleeps, her little body produces 3x more growth hormones." - from www.bedtime.com.ph

Last Saturday morning, I was fortunate to have been invited by Nuffnang to be a part of 'Bedtime Discoveries - Mommy Meet-Ups' forum.  It was my first "eye-ball" event and I can say it was a very pleasant experience as I got to meet other mom-bloggers from the metro, so thank you to Nuffnang and J&J.

This intimate gathering was the first of a series of fora from Johnson & Johnson's sleep campaign, which was launched last November.

It was a lovely, fun and informative discussion hosted by the very engaging Caren Bayhon-Yrastorza.  There was a short presentation from J&J about the importance of sleep and how to establish a bedtime routine for babies. We all shared some of our good, and not so good, experiences when it comes to our children's bedtime. While some kids and babies sleep peacefully through the night, others have experienced 'night terrors', hunger pangs, and other nuances which disturb the child's sleep.  My boy had his share of nightmares when he was 3 to 4 years old. And though this stage has passed, I can still remember trying all sorts of calming exercises like warm baths and gentle massages to aid in his good night's sleep. Lately, he still complains about bad dreams from time to time.  But there's nothing that a good hug can solve (",).

All the women present agreed that while babies grow as they sleep, another major benefit is actually for the mom to have her much needed break while baby is asleep -- and the longer the better!

What causes nightmares/night terrors? How will baby sleep longer through the night? How will we make bedtime more relaxing?
These are just a few questions raised during the open forum.

Here are some bedtime tips and tricks that were shared that morning:
  • Establish a routine and stick to a schedule so the child knows what to expect when it is time for bed
  • Dim the bedroom lights / turn on night lamp, or no lights at all, to condition the child and signal bedtime
  • Some babies like to be rocked to sleep as the vibration mimics the movement in utero
  • Babies are relaxed when they hear running water or soothing music
  • Give baby a warm bath before putting him to bed
I am also an advocate of touch therapy and infant massage, as well as playing classical music for a more relaxing sleep.
Lovely mommies at the meet-up -- Mia, Melanie and Bethchay

There's no question that sleep is essential in a child's growth and development. Babies sleep almost the whole day, while young children requires 10 hours of sleep. I also learned that babies' brain cells are repaired during sleep, and I believe ours too!

My girl immediately recognized these wonderful products I brought home since we use them since she was a baby.  The baby milk bath is her favorite.

Discover more about the science of sleep from Johnson & Johnson, one of the most trusted names in baby care products. For moms like me, you will surely learn so much more from Johnson's Baby Bedtime Sleep Library. You will find a step-by-step guide and various tools to help your make the most out of your child's precious sleep.

Sweet dreams!

Pets and Kids

Second Friday of the month:  Family and Pets

"Mommy, let's buy an angel fish."
"Daddy, I want a bunny...now!"
"Mommy, let's get a new doggie and I'll name him Buster."

The kids actually said those words.
Since we moved to our current abode two years ago, with our pet poodle in tow, our home has never been lacking of some friendly creatures of all shapes and sizes.

I grew up with a couple of dogs and they made great playmates for me and my bother, and as guard dogs too!  Now that I have kids of my own, I also wanted them to have a similar experience with having their own pets to care for and play with. So here's our pet gallery:

SUSHI. Our first family pet. He is a red toy poodle.
I was really happy that my children got introduced to Sushi at an early age. Well, it was actually the other way around -- Sushi was already with us when the kids were born so it was a bigger adjustment for him! (",)  Being with a dog took out some of the fear from the kids when they encounter other animals. And he proved to be a very sweet and lovable playmate for the tykes.  Sadly, Sushi went on to dog-heaven just before new year's day. He was with us for 8 years.

RED, the Fighting Fish. And RED-2.
My boy was almost 3 when got his first pet fish in 2006, a giveaway from a children's party we attended. He loved it! It was a deep red fighting fish and it came with it's own fish bowl. For obvious reasons, we named him by his color. He never missed peeking in the bowl and enjoyed feeding it fish flakes and breadcrumbs. Red went down the toilet after a year and a half.  Red-2 was for the girl. She got it from my sis-in-law before her 3rd birthday party. It only lived a couple of months.

We also had several tropical fishes that came and went.

HERMIT Crabs, Big one and Small one.
These critters were the most unlucky of our pets. Nameless, we just referred to them as the 'big one' and 'small one'.  I did not even know there was a 'small one' until the shell flipped and they swapped 'houses'!  They arrived as a surprise gift and we were just clueless on how to play and care for them. The kids were just interested with the decorative and fun shells they live in.  They got stiff after a week!  Okay, it was my fault -- I did everything right, except, it never occurred to me to give them a dish of water (bonking my head)!  :-(

SKYLER and RENEE, the bunnies.
Meet Renee, the brown 'boy' bunny, and the white 'girl' bunny named Skyler.  The kids insisted on the gender-bender names.  These super cute and cuddly hoppers are their current 'play things'.  I think it was due to my husband's influence that the girl was nagging me to buy her a bunny after her fish, Red-2, "got sick and died". Note the print on the blouse of my girl.

I was hesitant at first. I was just not ready to take care of another walking animal. But hubby had pet rabbits when he was younger so I trusted him to know more about caring for these adorable creatures. We got the pair last April.

These bunnies proved to be so irresistible, especially for my girl who loves to feed them with green leafy veggies.  But no luck for her brown bunny Renee (4th photo), who did not last a month. We suspected diarrhea.  Bunny rabbits need companions, and so no time to grieve. He was quickly replaced.

Here's Renee-2, a look-a-like (below) with a white streak on his head.  This one also croaked after a few weeks! We're still figuring out if the white bunny, who's grown bigger now, has anything to do with these series of unfortunate events. In the meantime, no replacement for Renee-2.

Having a house pet (or pets) brings a lot joy to any welcoming family. Kids will learn to be responsible for caring and nurturing the pet.  It will teach them to be sensitive and gentle. It will teach them respect and friendship.  But having one is also a big responsibility for the children, as well as the adults.  Parents and kids cannot simply decide on a whim, and here are some points you should consider before bringing home a pet:
  • Age of the child - small children must be supervised, older kids should be taught proper pet care
  • Safety - kids' safety from animals that may bite or sting, and animal's safety under living conditions you will provide
  • Allergies that any family member may have - animal hair/fur may aggravate your condition
  • What kind of animal would fit your household - allocate enough space, indoor or outdoor, neighbor concerns
  • Cost of caring for the chosen pet - food, shelter/cage, bedding, toys, vet, etc.
  • Time you can spend with the pet - time to feed, to play and interact, to groom, to clean cages, etc.
  • Animal life-span - how to deal or prepare when losing a pet
After a poodle, tens of fishes, a pair of crabs, and brown bunnies, we are now left with two algae eater fish, and a lone white bunny...for now.

If live animals are not your thing, then the stuffed ones can still deliver some cuddle factor.
Aren't they cute? Stuffed replicas of Skyler and Renee that the kids go to bed with.

What's your pet? Or are you ready for one?

Beat the (Election) Heat with Butchie's Buko-Dayap Sherbet

The country is experiencing an unbearable heatwave, compounded by the 'election fever', this hot summer month of May.  And while we all anxiously wait for the official results, let's all relax and cool down with this very refreshing sherbet!

Last weekend, the kids and I dropped by Butchie's Recipes along Wilson Street.  It just happened to be across Pan de Amerikana where we were buying our favorite wheat pandesal. Though the store is just a few minutes away from our place, this was the first time we went to check it out.

As we entered the quaint shop, I realized it was also a dining place where they serve home-style Campampangan dishes. We were also greeted with tall shelves stocked with local delicacies. The sights and smell brought back childhood memories (my maternal granny was from Pampanga). You can say this store showcased the best of Pampanga's culinary specialties.  I was overwhelmed, so were the kids and nanny, we didn't know what to grab and take home.

With an assortment of products on offer, I finally decided to buy a tray of silvanas and a jar of Masa Podrida (shortbread cookie). It was freakin' hot that day and the chest freezer on the corner was just pulling me in. Then I saw a small tub of Buko Cheese Dayap Sherbet. At first I thought the flavor sounded a little weird, right?  But what's more perplexing was seeing the Ebun Buro (salted egg) and Malunggay (moringa) ice cream!  Just the thought of those flavors in an ice cream were mind-boggling for me so I did not attempt to buy some of those (",).  Has anybody out there tried these already? I'd like to know your experience.

I bought the sherbet. The verdict:  This buko (coconut) sherbet, flavored with just a hint of cheese (and maybe some pandan essence?) and sprinkled with bits of fresh dayap (native lime) rind is one of the best sherbets I've tasted in terms of flavor. Refreshing to the max! I'm an instant fan.

Unlike other sherbets (sorbets) that lacked real juice, Butchie's Buko Cheese Dayap Sherbet delivers an authentic flavor that you can really taste. Every spoonful will have chewy bits of coconut complemented with a citrus kick from the dayap rind.  The cheese was invisible to me but somewhere in each scoop, you can still taste a bit of its creaminess. And when it melts, you'll know it's real buko juice in there.  One thing I didn't like was it's shaved-ice-like appearance. I would have loved it even more if this concoction was made smoother in texture. But the flavor still won me over.

I will definitely go back to Butchie's and try their other yummy delights!

Have a cool week ahead!

My Mom-Friday is 1: Happy Mother's Day!!!

12 months of blogging.  Wow, I finally reached the 1-year mark!

THANK YOU, thank you, thank you -- for your encouragement and inspiration, for spending your precious time to read, to share your thoughts, or to simply drop by at the personal (web) journal of this multi-tasking mom.

My Mom-Friday was "conceived" on the eve of Mother's Day 2009, and I took that as a sign to finally start a blog (web log) of my own, at the prodding of a very dear friend from the amazing Folie a Deux site. mymomfriday.com was created as my repository of collected information, parenting-related or otherwise. So every Mother's Day will be a celebration of My Mom-Friday's anniversary as well. No other day could be better -- a special day of recognition and gratitude for all the tireless, fearless and devoted moms.

I can still remember how I struggled for words while composing my maiden post since I haven't written an article in almost half a decade! (I used to work at an advertising-PR-events agency where writing tag-lines, ad copy, and fielding short press releases were part of the daily grind).  I knew that my amateur writing skills have become more rusty through the years.  I thought, 'How the h**l would I be able to publish a decent write-up?!?' Even once a week would be a challenge. And who will read them?

This was my first header, inspired by a "Mom" charm bracelet from Tiffany's website.

Fast forward today, I am proud to have logged in a decent number of entries (106) and hits (close to 14,000) on my first 365 days as a mommy-blogger. Not too shabby.  But what would be most rewarding is knowing that somehow, I was able to bring something positive into your lives. While I learned a lot about myself through this blog, I also gained more knowledge, even friendships, from other inspiring sites that now make up my reading list. This time, I want to learn more about you, my dear readers. I want to make My Mom-Friday better for you.

Now, here's a special note to all the amazing MOM-FRIDAYS out there -- a re-print of my 'Mother' poem as a heartfelt greeting from me to you. You can also share this card to all the moms you know to show your love and appreciation. (Just right-click and save the picture).
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to my mama, and TO ALL MOM-FRIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD!

Learn more about My Mom-Friday here, and how this blog all started.
Have a glimpse of my very first post with this poem, published via a print ad on May 9, 1999 -- exactly 11 years ago tomorrow.

p.s.
As you all know, it's gonna be a big and memorable weekend for everyone in the Philippines.  Tomorrow will be Mother's Day and on Monday, the Filipino people will elect a new president. Vote wisely people.

Fusili with Smoked Chorizo

First Friday of the month:  Mom-Cook

Fusili with Smoked Chorizo -- that's the answer to my previous post. One of you guessed it right, and I did realize that all your answers can be correct too just based on the mystery photo alone :-)  So, thanks a bunch to those who joined and tried to guess.

I love Italian cuisine, especially pasta dishes. Be it in tomato sauce, cheesy cream, or aglio e olio (garlic & oil), I'll devour it.  When I get inspired, I also try to replicate some unique and flavorful pasta dishes I've tried while dining out.  Like this recent dinner with the girlfriends at Cafe 1771 (formerly Chateau 1771 in El Pueblo Real, Ortigas Center, Pasig City), we ordered pasta chorizo and it was wiped out in minutes. A very simple and savory pasta dish with a Spanish twist, it was really, really good. At that moment, I thought I should get myself some chorizo and try to do this at home pronto!

This is the first time I used chorizo in my cooking, ever. And now I wondered why I didn't make this earlier.  It is so easy to make. You can say it's an instant dish if you look at the ingredients and procedure below.  Just get the best chorizo you can find.

Fusili with Smoked Chorizo

250 gms. Fusili / Spiral pasta
250 gms. smoked chorizo sausage (regular or spicy can work as well)
2 tablespoons minced garlic
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 teaspoon cumin
2 - 3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
2 teaspoons all purpose cream (optional)

To prepare:
Boil fusili as instructed in the pack (you may opt for spaghetti, angel hair pasta if you wish)
While pasta is boiling, mince garlic and set aside.
Peel off skin from the chorizo sausage, crumble the meat by hand or with a fork, set aside.

To cook:
In a pan, heat olive oil and sautee garlic until light brown
Mix in chorizo bits and continue to sautee until cooked, or lighty toasted
Add more oil if it's too dry for you, heat through
Sprinkle with cumin, and toss in the grated parmesan
Add cream, if desired, to cut down on the smokey-spicy flavor

Toss in the cooked fusili and serve with more grated cheese.

I prefer fusili for this dish 'coz I like it when the bits of meat get stuck in the grooves of the pasta and it's faster to eat than noodles. As for the chorizo, the brand I used here is Fil Fresh since it was the only one on the chiller section of Unimart supermarket (in Greenhills) at that time. I rarely buy deli products so I honestly don't know which brands carry premium quality and tasty chorizo. Your recommendations are welcome.

I was really aiming for a salty-spicy-sweet finish, which I did not get from this initial "experiment" of mine.  I think I needed another variety of melted cheese, or maybe I should have added some brown sugar? Next time.  The main appeal of this dish is it's smokey and spicy (mild) flavor brought by the chorizo and garlic, and the zing of lotsa cheese.  Still, it was a satisfying dinner for me, matched with a cold glass of Zesto Dalandan Soda ;)

Mom-Cook: What Pasta Dish is This?

How well do you know your pasta?

This is just for fun, okay :)
I can't wait for Friday to post this, but I have to. Consider this as a teaser for my first-Friday-of-the-month food post. We just had this for dinner and I thought that for a first try at this simple pasta dish, it turned out quite good for me.

Can you guess what this is?

I'm just curious about your answers since after taking initial shots of this, I found it to be generic-looking and not so appealing. I bet those of you who love to cook and eat, especially pasta dishes, will be able to get it at first glance.  Just leave your answers on the feedback form.  This will surely make my weekend more exciting! Plus the fact that this blog of mine will turn 1 on Mother's Day! Yey!!!  So, join the fun and start guessing...check back on Friday!
