For the past few days, I've been binging on this delectable Filipino pastry... the buco tart, which is an offshoot of the famous buko/buco (young coconut) pie, from Laguna province and Tagaytay City. I eat one tart (sometimes 3!) a day since Friday, the 23rd.
Amira's Buco Tart Haus is a famous stop-over among visitors of Tagaytay. Aside from a variety of local delicacies and sweets on offer, their specialty is the best-selling buco tarts, baked fresh every day.
I don't know the secret recipe of Amira's, but buco pie/tart filling is basically made from shredded young coconut (very tender), coconut juice, milk/condensed milk, cornstarch, and sugar. The crust closely resembles, and tastes like an apple pie crust.
After a relaxing retreat with friends at Nurture Spa that day (which I will also feature here in the coming weeks), we made sure to pass by Amira's to bring home some tarts. I bought 3 boxes, and a pack of suman (sticky rice cake roll).
Each box contains 9 buco tarts in individual paper cups, and costs only P160.00/box (less than US$4). Our usher from the spa accompanied us into the store and asked the sales lady for a group discount on our behalf and she slashed P10 off. So we only paid P150 per box! :)
I intended to give a box each to my parents and brother as pasalubong (token/gift from travel), but I forgot to bring it during our Sunday family lunch. Well, you can say my selfishness got the best of me when I emptied my box, so... I decided to just keep the 2 boxes! (Okay, just so you know, I shared a few tarts with my girl, and with my in-laws who are staying with us.)
For breakfast, dessert, afternoon and midnight snack -- I'm addicted! I'm down to the last box and I need to savor it to the last bite 'coz I don't know when I'll be able to go back to Amira's.
