Raising the Barre at Physique 57 Manila

I am so into self care right now that I find myself trying all sorts of treatments and activities that come my way. What's funny is that I never thought about any of these beauty and fitness stuff when I was younger. At 45, I am more conscious now when it comes to overall wellness. I'm motivated more than ever to continue my fitness journey, for myself and for my family. And the latest workout I've tried was barre at the newly opened Physique 57 Manila.

When I was invited to the pre-opening trial class, I initially declined because the location, BGC, is far from where I live. Eventually, my curiosity took over and I went with my fitness junkie friend, Jackie, to try it out. =)  Since we both practice pilates regularly, we're confident we can hack it, kahit clueless kami about the whole barre method.

Physique 57, an innovative and modern take on the best of The Lotte Berk Method, debuted in New York City in February 2006. Today, you'll find more studios in NYC, the Hamptons, LA, Dubai, Bangkok, Mumbai, and now Manila -- which officially opened its doors last July 9.

How barre works at Physique 57:

Using your own bodyweight as resistance, the Physique 57 workout targets the muscles in your arms, thighs, seat and abs to the point of fatigue, then stretches them for relief.
The effective process, called Interval Overload, includes:
 - muscle-defining arm exercises
- intense thigh and seat sequences
- waist-chiseling ab moves
- fluid stretches

What to prepare and expect at Physique 57 Manila:
  • Bring a friend - the more the merrier
  • Wear appropriate workout clothes and grip socks
    • bring hand towel (you will sweat a lot) and water bottle
    • the studio also sells fitness apparel and accessories in case you what to change or forget to bring socks or towels
  • Spacious and well-equipped barre studio (it was a full house during the trial class so I felt a bit cramped )
    • lockers are available to store your belongings
    • use of resistance bands, excercise ball, and hand weights
    • use of mats and ballet barre
  • 57 minutes of fun and intense workout (my legs were dead afterwards, hahaha)
    • incorporates a few dance moves and some positions derived from ballet, yoga and pilates
    • focus is on small, pulsing movements - while it's mainly a full body cardio workout, you will #feeltheburn mostly on the lower half of the body, on the abs, legs and glutes
    • puts emphasis on proper form, alignment and core engagement
    • fast-paced, high-energy (the space was big and instructors were moving around so there were times I could not see or clearly hear the cues)
    • for muscle-toning, fat-burning, body-sculpting
    • a good complementary workout if you do yoga or weight training

True enough, there were similar exercise series between pilates and barre. Took a while to get with their pace but the moves were familiar so it was not difficult for me to execute. The class was intense, high level of energy all around, and faster counts with the movements. Not easy at all, but it works, kasi I really felt the burn, and was sore the next day.

The class was led by the energetic Mia Cabalfin and Beverly Hills-based Physique 57 trainer, Lyndsey Makovsky, who was their guest instructor for the trial week. She was amazing. We were fortunate to have this class with her coz she's highly encouraging, focused, and very upbeat. Inggit ako sa abs and arms niya, hehe!

I survived! =) Thank you, Physique 57 Manila! Barre was definitely something different for me and I enjoyed it, kahit hingal na hingal ako the whole time, hehehe. While it may not be the best workout for my physical needs (I can't do too much cardio because I'll burn a lot of calories and I have an abnormal goal to gain weight - sorry, I know, I'm a freak), it was exciting and I'm willing to do a class again.
