Mom-Finds: And Apparel Strapless Maxi

Last Friday of the month:  Shopping / Fashion

Growing up, I've never been a fan of shorts and minis.  I guess it's because I was too skinny my whole life (it was a major insecurity for me) and was never confident wearing them in public - unless necessary, like on the beach of course! I am most comfortable in pants. If I have to wear a dress or skirt, it should be knee-length at the very least, and I'm good to go.

My most recent shopping find is this Miya Maxi Dress by And Apparel - another versatile piece from one of my favorite online stores, Catalogue63.

DON'Ts: How to Invite a Blogger to an Event

So, what are the DON'Ts?

Let me count the ways (in no particular order):
  1. Send a general invitation vie email without a salutation
  2. Send a general invitation without proper introduction about the event/company/brand/product
  3. Send a general invitation without stating the agency they represent
  4. Send an invitation via text message
  5. Send invitation to an out-of-town event or geographically inconvenient venue without transpo service
  6. Send last minute details to an invitation for an out-of-town event
  7. No confirmation email about event itinerary
  8. Tweet a blogger and ask for a specific number of blogger names / referrals to invite
  9. Send follow-up text messages with changes in event details of a previously declined event (by agency rep) - ang kulit!!!
  10. Send follow-up text messages with a request to call blogger (past 6pm, on a weekend!) about the previously declined event (by agency boss)
  11. Send text message of the event with a different time to different bloggers.
  12. Send last minute text message about changes on the day of the event.
  13. Use the name of blogger A to invite and/or convince blogger B to attend the event (without the knowledge of blogger A)
  14. Use the name of blogger A to invite and/or convince blogger B to attend the event (even if blogger A will not attend.)
  15. Send an invitation addressed to a different person* (Additional DON'T*) - Thanks to blogger Pehpot for leaving a comment and reminding me about this!
I'm sure there are more DON'Ts when it comes to inviting guests to events.  I just came up this list of ways that I believe a company (client) or event organizer / PR agency can FAIL in inviting a blogger like myself.  And yes, I've experience all of the above in the past from different organizers.  So if you want to turn-off guests (bloggers), just do any of the above.

This random post today is for all my blogger friends, clients, and organizers - hoping we can all learn from this, and learn to respect each other when it comes to these activities.  But this is mainly because of a very recent event I was invited to, with the date changed twice (or thrice...I can't recall anymore). Would you believe that most of the items on this list were committed by just one (1) agency that I have not even heard off until 2 months ago, for what I believe was their first attempt at having bloggers to an event? What really pissed me off was what the organizer did to me - see #13 & #14!
You be the judge.

On a side note, I was an event organizer myself so I expect professionalism from anyone that invites me.  I also expect the venue to be set up before guests arrive, and not while the guests are already at the venue (which also happened to this particular event I'm talking about, as shared to me by one of the bloggers who attended).  Organizers should be ready at the venue with all the materials and presentation equipment at least 1 hour before the time specified on the invitation.  Since it's really an effort for me to attend events, and my time is really calculated when I do, I hate it when I arrive on time and not one representative from the organizer is present to usher in guests, and program starts more than 30 minutes after time of invite.

I think I never ranted like this on my blog before, but it just blew my top off when I learned that my name was used by people who don't know how to do their jobs professionally.  Whatever happens, the end-result will reflect on the brand, regardless of who did the actual inviting.

I'll stop here.  Thank you for indulging me.

If you have similar experiences, do share!

Toki Q Japanese-style Rotating Barbecue

The country's first rotating barbecue fast food restaurant -- that's Toki Q!
TOKI Q Rotating BBQ (photo from Toki Q)

Toki Q is conveniently located within my neighborhood, so when Jane extended the invite to me, off I went to the intimate blogger mixer held last month, organized by Zodio (more about Zodio before I end this post).  I'm glad I attended since I really enjoyed everything that they served us.

See that rotating contraption above?  It's the rotating griller/broiler that the resto owners imported from Japan. That's were all the yakitori (skewered chicken) and pork belly get their ride around the "barbecue carousel" and get grilled to perfection.

Check out their menu of savory and very affordable Japanese-style BBQ dishes basted in their very own sweet and salty "Toki sauce".  Toki Q offers Combo meals, a'la carte dishes, and even group platters.
COMBO MEALS COME IN SLEEK PAPER-LINED TIN TRAYS

I was able to try their Combo 3 (from top to bottom):
  • Chicken Wings - 2 pcs.
  • Chicken Fillet - tender boneless fillets
  • Tontoro Pork -  thinly sliced pork belly
  • Chicken Ball - 3 pcs.
Although my Tontoro was more charred than the other sticks, I still enjoyed it more than the balls. Everything was very tasty and flavorful.  I really liked the taste and doneness of the meats, plus, they offer unlimited rice with the combos, so you'll definitely have a full and satisfying meal!

MENU from Toki Q

For the food quality and price, Toki Q is a far better, and healthier, alternative to your typical fast food fare.

Aside from my hearty Combo 3 meal, I also got to try their extras:
  • Toki BBQ Corn - Spicy flavored powder on grilled corn, which I still crave from time to time
  • Kara-age - bite-sized glazed crispy fried chicken, a popular Japanese appetizer, which became my favorite at the end of the night
KARA-AGE

I made sure I left room for dessert 'coz they also offered a favorite of mine - mochi! The only available flavor then was the Black Sesame, which was a winner for me with its chewy bits of caramelized sesame seeds with ice cream.  I had one happy tummy that night! =)

The place is very small though, and can accommodate around 12-14 people only.  Parking is available in front of the resto and at the building's basement.  But I've observed during the event that several customers just order to-go.

So, what's the connection between Toki Q and Zodio?
Zodio is the Philippine’s first social location-based search and reviews platform

Scent of the Moment: pureDKNY Vanilla

"To be Pure is to be ourselves.  This soft floral scent features a drop of vanilla in water as its signature. Accords of lotus flower and Bulgarian rose harmonize with jasmine, freesia, and lush orchid.  It finishes with warm amber and creamy sandalwood." - www.dkny.com

The title is an obvious giveaway.  I've been wearing pureDKNY almost everyday for a month now.  I received this gift from Aramis and Designer Fragrances (ADF) early August and I must say, I was hooked from my first spritz of pureDNKY Vanilla. As soon as I got a whiff, I knew this is my kind of fragrance.  I have a short list of fragrances I use alternately.  Depending on my mood, I switch from a few light, fresh citrus-scented brands to more elegantly-scented fragrances.

I don't have what you call a signature scent.   My mood mainly dictates what I wear, be it clothes, to shoes, to fragrances.  And I've long been using vanilla-scented body sprays and lotions, so if you're like me, you will also love this pureDNKY Vanilla.

DKNY actually created this Pure fragrance line for a cause, which is very admirable and noteworthy:  "It's more than just a scent, it is a state of mind, a way of being.  Each drop of vanilla is sourced by vanilla bean farmers in Uganda to try and help support local communities and fight global poverty."

I also learned that the whole packaging of this product is made with recyclable materials, from the paper box to the light aluminum cap.

What I like about this fragrance:
As quoted up top, pureDKNY features a drop of vanilla, creating a mood that can evoke...
  • Sweetness
  • Warmth
  • Comfort
  • Calm
  • Simplicity
  • Elegance
It's actually just a hint of sweet vanilla, not even as strong as my Bath & BodyWorks Warm Vanilla Sugar body spray.

Much like the first photo I took above, with the thick and cozy pink sweater, just a couple of sprays are enough to make me feel good and fuzzy all over every time I wear it.  PureDKNY Vanilla is simply a feel-good scent that can take you from day to night.  A quick spray at my nape does it for me.
SRP @ PhP 3,500 - 1.7oz. / 50ml

With the rainy-cool weather we're having lately, the delightfully warm scent is just the perfect fragrance to wear.  It makes a wonderful gift idea too, especially with the coming holidays.

PureDKNY Vanilla is my scent of the moment.  What's yours?

Family Friday: How To Cut (Kids) Hair

Second Friday of the month:  Parenting / Kids / Grooming

I first learned how to trim my hair (bangs) by watching my mother, and the hair dressers at the salons.  She gave me and my brother an apple cut when we were younger.  I literally watched and learned.  But I never thought I'd be cutting my kids' hair from their first birthday until their toddler years.  Well, in the case of the girl, until today!

Toys "R" Us and the New Robinsons Magnolia

It was like 3 years ago that I've been passing by this construction site in New Manila everyday to and from my boy's preschool.  I often wondered when this building will be completed and how it will change this quiet neighborhood where I grew up.

Last August 13, I was one of the first to visit this newest mall in Quezon City on its opening day.  Together with a few blogger friends, I was invited to the opening of the 15th Toys "R" Us store in the country, located in the spanking new Robinsons Magnolia.

The simple opening ceremony was graced by representatives from Toys "R" Us Philippines, mall officials, as well as adorable kids in cute costumes.

The girl was more excited since I promised her a treat if she goes with me to the opening.  Her class starts after lunch so the timing of the event was just perfect!

The Toys "R" Us Magnolia store is significantly smaller than their branch in Galleria, but they still carry all of my kids' favorite toys, plus the fact that it's conveniently located too.

Of course, the girl came home all giddy that day -- proud of the new addition to her My Little Pony collection, and a surprise toy for big brother.  We went back again a week later, this time with the whole family.  We went home with new toys, including this game set enjoyed by my boys.

Aside from Toys "R" Us, there are more shops that I am looking forward to visiting soon.

Contemporary dining chairs at the food court

I appreciate the super sleek and modern interiors, I like the feeling of space all around.

Unlike other malls where it can get really cramped at times, the bright lighting, wide hallways, and high ceiling make for a more pleasurable shopping experience here at Robinsons Magnolia.

I'm happy there's a new toy store and mall in this side of the city, closer to where I used to live.  But nostalgia hits me every time since this landmark brings happy childhood memories.  My family used to dine at the old Magnolia House where this mall now stands, and buy the ice cream 'Flavor of The Month' from the store.  Good thing they opened a quaint Magnolia Ice Cream parlor by the garden area of the mall that I have yet to visit.  That's gonna be my next stop when I go back to the mall again one of these days.

Robinsons Magnolia is located at the corner of Hemady Street and Aurora Blvd. in New Manila, Quezon City, where the old Magnolia Ice Cream House and factory used to be.

Foodie Friday: Samgyupsal (Grilled Pork Belly)

First Friday of the month:  Food / Recipe

Finally, it's time for some Korean dish!
I've been eating this dish in Korean restaurants every time I get a chance. Shame on me, I never got to remember what it's called.  All I know is there's a slice of meat, dipping sauce, and it's wrapped in lettuce.

When I attended the Lock & Lock bloggers' event over a month ago, there was a cooking demo, and that's when I realized it's such a simple dish that I can do at home.  Finally, I got the name right = Samgyupsal!

Sam gyup sal (or samgyeopsal / samkyupsal) literally means 3 layer flesh/fat - which is made of pork, the belly or bacon part to be exact.

I was able to recreate this dish after the event.  But since I've had a few food posts sitting in drafts for the longest time, I can't decide what I should share first.  A poll on my Facebook page did the trick, thus, the choco-mallow cookie recipe was published here instead.

I Am a Proud Anmum Mommy

Let me just say I am thrilled to have Anmum as a blog sponsor! Yey!!! =) If you subscribe to this blog, you'd have noticed the Anmum leaderboard/ad up on the homepage displayed since July.  I'm just proud to be a part of the Anmum Mommy Circle because the brand is really close to my heart.  Why?

Well, if you must know...
  • It's the only milk I took while I was pregnant (twice) and breastfeeding
  • During my stint in advertising, Anmum was one of my key accounts (client) ever since it was launched in the local market in the late 90s (as with the rest of the New Zealand-made milk brands, Anchor and Anlene)
  • My first blog post featured the Anmum material I made for their Mother's Day print ad
So you see, it was an easy decision for me to have Anmum as a blog partner.  I believe in the brand, I loved drinking it, I reaped the benefits, I recommend it to my friends, and I know the product very well.  At the Anmum blogger partners' luncheon over a month ago, the brand managers even teased me to do the presentation after learning about my history with Anmum! =)
