Summer-Perfect Ipanema Hot Sands Sandals

The month of March signals the beginning of summer here in the Philippines, and we can all expect something new and fabulous from our favorite fashion brands, from clothing to footwear. Ipanema is no exception as the popular Brazilian flipflop brand recently unveiled the Gisele Bündchen Hot Sands Collection -- a colorful and summery collection of nature-themed footwear that's perfect for the season!

The Ipanema Gisele Bündchen Hot Sands Collection was just launched a week ago via a beach-themed fashion show held at the Prestige Lounge of SM Megamall. I'm such an Ipanema fan so I was excited to be invited, but the time was just impossible for me. Well, better late than never. As expected, I completely missed the show and arrived just as the guests were starting to leave, so no fashion show photos for me :((( . My friends told me the presentation was brief, featuring pretty models sashaying in Coco Cabaña’s swim wear line that complemented the latest Ipanema sandals.

The Hot Sands Collection consists of colorful, summery, and stunningly beautiful sandals with the trademark bow design. Take your pick from an array of gorgeous platforms to sexy sandals.
My picks from the Ipanema Hot Sands Collection
What's noteworthy about this latest collection is its support to ISA (Instituto Socioambiental). ISA is a socio-environmental institute in Brazil working for this advocacy -- 'Fight Against Climate Change Central Strategy', a program that is optimistic about people's relationship with the planet and proposes that we all think about what we can do right now, in practice, to improve our lives.  Visit Ipanema Philippines on Facebook to find out how you can help save the environment by posting an eco-saving tip for a chance to win a free pair of Ipanema GB sandals!

I already have my eye on the wedge slip-ons.  Now, here's a treat from Ipanema:
To all SM Advantage/Prestige Card holders (I am!), you can avail of a 10% price off on the Hot Sands Collection just by presenting your card upon purchase at any SM department stores for the whole month of March. Coolness!

Hello summer!!!
Meeting up with my hot-momma friends made this very brief attendance all the more worthwhile.

Mom-Finds: Online Shopping at Mothering Earthlings

Last Friday of the month:  Mom-Finds and Raves / Fashion finds

"...an Earthling Mama makes room for her Earthlings to explore style and self expression, even when some of the choices her Earthling makes do not fit her own sense of style. Our vibe and our style are about creativity, imagination, touches big and small that Earthlings use to express their style and their personality."

The intro above is from the newest proudly-Filipino online shopping site offering an array of choice hip clothing that complement the unique personalities of the little ones. And just the other day, I was a satisfied and happy customer when I got my first purchase from Mothering Earthlings.

As I was browsing to look for a nice gift, I spotted this very mod white and black A-line dress in cotton piqué fabric from Ines Moda Infantil, one of the brands they carry. The dress has that 60s vibe, not your typical frou-frou girly dress, and that's why I love it!  It also comes in black reverse color.
'Luli' dress by Ines Moda Infantil @ P660
A few clicks and a day later, my order was ready.  I am not new to online shopping, but this is my first purchase from a local merchant. Since I am privileged to know one of the ladies behind this fab site, I was confident about the quality of the items and I know I'll get what I ordered. It was quick, simple and so convenient. I used my Paypal account and chose to pick-up the item since the pick-up point is conveniently along my daily route. They have corresponding delivery fees if you choose this option, even outside the Philippines.

I was surprised to see that my order was packed in this brown paper bag, simply labeled and sealed with a logo sticker. When I opened it, the dress was not wrapped in clear plastic as I have expected, which is typical for newly-bought items.  Then I realized and came to appreciate the thought behind it -- making the packaging earth-friendly. It was a very nice touch indeed. They are, after all, Mothering Earthlings! =)

After taking the dress out of the bag, I quickly changed my mind and just wanted to keep the chic 'Luli' dress for my girl instead! But she was not feeling it yet, so it's going to be on stand-by in my gifts bin for now.

Go ahead and check out their site and you're sure to find cool, quirky, and stylish kids' and babies' wear that will make the tykes stand out, with brands like:

Googoo & Gaga

In The Crib

Proud Mama

Expect more fashionable finds and exciting items in their line-up soon!

Visit and shop online at:
Mothering Earthlings

Update:
After a couple of months, the girl finally decided to wear the dress and channeled her inner "mod". And then she's off to horsey land! :)

Chillin' Over Fro-yo at Tutti Frutti - SM Center Pasig

A perfect way to spend a warm sunny day is hanging out with fellow moms over a nice cup of healthy frozen yogurt.  Thanks to Tutti Frutti at SM Center Pasig, I was able to do exactly that one lovely afternoon.

Our host for that casual get-together shared a brief background about Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt, after which he led us to the dispensing machines where we got to taste all the different flavors on offer that day. Yay!!!
Facade of Tutti Frutti inside SM Center Pasig, fronting the Hypermart
With over 50 different Tutti Frutti flavors, they rotate their offerings every week, except for their 3 best-selling flavors: TF Original Tart, Taro, and Ghirardelli-based Death by Chocolate, which are always available. Their store have 8 flavors to choose from. That day, we were able to sample Strawberry Banana, Strawberry, Pomegranate, Vanilla, and Cookies and Cream, aside from the top three mentioned.

Tasting time!
Top-selling Tutti Frutti Taro, with it's subtly sweet and not-so-creamy gabi flavor, has been my favorite since the first time I've tasted it last year. I had a blend of Taro and Original Tart. Well, all of us got their Original Tart -- a safe bet with it's smooth, natural, fresh yogurt taste that's not too tart, which I really like. And it's best enjoyed with their fresh fruit toppings!

Surprisingly, I liked their Pomegranate too, having a hint of sweet citrus taste. The Death By Chocolate (DBC) and Strawberry are sure hits to those who prefer the sweet and creamy flavor with the healthy fat-free goodness of yogurt. We noticed that their fro-yo has a very smooth consistency, yet it doesn't melt easily -- plus points for that.

We all had a hard time choosing our toppings from the wide selection. My personal choices:  fresh fruits like strawberries, mangoes and kiwis; sliced almonds and mocchi! They also have blueberries, cherries, various cereals, chocolate chips, crushed grahams, oreos, nata de coco, jellies, marshmallows and so much more! For a richer taste, you can even drizzle dark chocolate and caramel gourmet sauces from Monin of France.

Tutti Frutti is in my list of favorite frozen yogurt stores simply because of their wide range of flavors where there's always something for everyone in the family. Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt has over 150 stores around the world. This American fro-yo franchise has over 50 different flavors with an assortment of toppings to choose from. And what makes them more popular among their customers is their self-service concept.  Simply choose your cup size, select your fro-yo flavors, dispense the fro-yo, add toppings, weigh, and pay (@ P20 per ounce).

For the weigh-in -- my cup with Taro & DBC under the Original Tart, topped with kiwi, mango, strawberry, almonds, and mocchi. Winner!

Can you spell 'bottoms up for 5 cups'?

Surely, this won't be our last here at Tutti Frutti!

Fun Friday: Taekwondo Classes for Kids

Third Friday of the month:  Sports / Recreation

Taekwondo (Korean) - tae means "to strike or break with foot"; kwon means "to strike or break with fist"; and do means "way," "method," or "art." Thus, taekwondo may be loosely translated as "the art of the foot and fist" or "the art of kicking and punching." Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. - wikipedia

Mom-Friday's Lumpiang Cheekoy (Tikoy-Cheese Sticks)

Kid#1 - eating cheese stick
Kid#2 - eating lumpiang tikoy
Me - Tikoy+Cheese+Lumpia wrapper =Accidentally yummy-freaky goodness!

That was my shout-out at my Facebook page yesterday after cooking those snacks for the kids. This surprise happened while I was frying my favorite lumpiang tikoy first, then followed by the cheese sticks requested by the girl. With the last tikoy stick still frying, I continued with the cheese sticks in the same pan and accidentally left it too long. So, the Quickmelt cheese filling slowly oozed out and stick to the tikoy frying beside it. In short, I have to eat those two rejects and unknowingly created this gooey-chewy-yummy mutation of this lumpia snack, a delicious disaster which I now dare claim and name christen as Mom-Friday's Lumpiang Tikoy at Keso Cheekoy (many thanks to Pia for suggesting the name, genius!)

To document my new-found foodie discovery, and satiate our cravings, I recreated the lumpiang tikoy for our afternoon snack, only this time, I did it the proper way with the tikoy and cheese cuts wrapped together in a spring roll shell, then fried.  I used Hongley tikoy (the best brand in my book!) and our pantry staple Magnolia Quickmelt cheese.

Don't freak out if you find some cheese oozing out from the corners while it cooks. It means it's ready, even though the shell may not be as golden as desired.

Literally, you'll taste the 'best of both worlds' in one bite -- the creamy, mildly salted Quickmelt cheese binding onto the sweet, fragrant, and chewy tikoy, with a burst of texture from the crisp lumpia wrapper. Plus, the savory aroma of fried cheese drippings compound the gooey-goodness of this wicked combo!

Who knew this cooking accident can create a scrumptious and oh-so-addictive delicacy!  I can eat this Lumpiang Cheekoy everyday! If you are lucky to still have some tikoy lying around the house, go try it now!!! (pardon my abusive use of exclamation points)

So what is lumpiang tikoy? Here's the post:

Chicken Charlie Take-out Lunch

There are days when we feel like just ordering in food. Okay, let me re-phrase that -- I feel like NOT cooking food.  Last Saturday was one of those days and I decided I'd just order from this fairly new food outlet in our neighborhood called Chicken Charlie.

I've been wanting to try our their chicken since late last year when they opened this seemingly hole-in-the-wall eatery in our own "little Chinatown" in San Juan city. Finally, I was able to taste their delicious fried chicken for lunch with the whole family.
Drumsticks in regular and spicy (marked with toothpicks) flavors
Here's what I ordered for our family of 4 adults and 2 kids:
  • 4 pcs. chicken wings - combo of regular and spicy = P99
  • 6 pcs. chicken drumstick - combo of regular and spicy = P289
We all loved the crispiness of the chicken and moist meat inside. It smells so appetizingly good too! They were not oily at all and the sweet-salty coating has just the right blend of flavors and spices. The wings were a bit small, while the drumsticks were just big enough. I still go for the wings when eating chicken. :)

One thing I noticed though was that while biting through the drumstick, the meat was starting to taste bland. Maybe not enough marinating time? I realized the flavors were all on the skin. As hubby puts it, you have to go at it in one bite, skin and meat together, to appreciate the chicken. But overall, I still enjoyed my meal of 2-piece Chicken Charlie spicy wing and regular drumstick, with corn on the cob and rice! Yum!

By the way, they don't have delivery (from San Juan) so you can either dine in or order take-out.

A Valentine Poem

"Roses are red,
viotets are blue,
you are the Best
and...
I love you."

This was a Valentine project from my boy -- a unique, crafty pop-up card. Yes, he misspelled "violets" and I'm guessing he wrote the word like how he heard it from the teacher, I'm sure. And it actually made this card even cuter! :-)  Made with love, such is the kind that's most treasured.

Happy Valentine's Day!

This was last year's :)

Family Friday: 5 Critical Needs for Emotionally Healthy Children

Second Friday of the month:  Parenting / Family

“Being a parent is one of the greatest joys that one experiences in life, but also one of the most difficult and anxiety provoking responsibilities any of us will ever have…yet we come to it almost totally unprepared, with little or no training.” – Dr. G. Newmark

I was trying to think of a topic for today's Family Friday post over the past week. And since it's the "love month", I was hoping I would be inspired by this season of hearts. Nothing.

Then I remembered reading something about how to raise emotionally healthy children from Moms Like You, a mommy site on Facebook I've followed recently.  It was so enlightening. I realized that loving our children unconditionally is not enough. As parents, we have to truly understand our children as individuals in order to fill their needs and help them grow to become the best person they can be, in all aspects -- physically, intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally. Now that's how we give love.

Believe me, this is something worth reading. Allow me to share, and I quote:
"An expert in parent-child relations, Dr. Gerald Newmark, developed these guidelines recognizing the five critical needs that children have in common – the need to feel respected, important, accepted, included, and secure. By understanding these needs, we can develop an “action-oriented strategy” and a consistent approach to parenting to achieve emotionally healthy children and families."
5 Critical Needs of Children
From the book How To Raise Emotionally Healthy Children, by Gerald Newmark, Ph.D.

1. Need to Feel Respected
Children need to be treated with courtesy, consideration and esteem. Parents’ opinions, values, attitudes, and actions matter to them.
Adults tend to be rude and inconsiderate, which stems from thoughtlessness. Avoid calling them names, belittling them by word, tone, or action. Inappropriate anger, impatience or sarcasm creates defensiveness or retaliatory behavior by the child. Parents should learn to say “please”, “thank you”, and “excuse me” to them. Remember, children have feelings too and how we say something is as important as what we say.
Parents need to stop lying to children. When we lie, we lose credibility, giving them the impression that lying is okay. Honestly is still the best policy.
Listen more and talk less. When we get easily distracted, when we ignore them and don’t give our attention, we disrespect them.
As long as parents understand this need and show children the respect they deserve, they will feel good about themselves. They can grow up with self-respect and in turn be respectful of others.

2. Need to Feel Important
Help children develop their sense of self-worth, usefulness, control, and identity. If they don’t develop a sense of importance in constructive ways, they may seek negative ways to get attention.
Children need to try things to learn and grow. So we need to encourage rather than inhibit their curiosity, experimentation, and desire for adventure. But there should be a balance in protectiveness and permissiveness on our part. Negotiate and establish limits. Involve them in the decision process as it will contribute to their sense of importance. Ask their opinions and give due recognition. Avoid doing all the work and controlling everything.
Children feel powerless when parents talk too much. One of the most valuable assets in interpersonal relations is the ability to give someone you are with your undivided attention, the feeling of being the most important person in the world at that moment. A great way to show how important they are is when we listen to and care about what they have to say, even for just a few minutes.
Always give children constructive, meaningful ways to feel important and treat them as though they are.

3. Need to Feel Accepted
Acceptance means listening, trying to understand children, recognizing their feelings, desires, opinions and ideas.
A child’s feelings are not to be suppressed or feared but rather to be understood, discussed, and worked with when necessary. We often do children a disservice by attempting to talk them out of their feelings. It’s not comforting or enlightening. A parent who understands that feelings aren’t right or wrong will send a message that it’s perfectly fine to have these feelings.
Children need more acknowledgements than put downs. Parents should learn to focus on the behavior and not the person, and to reject with love and not with anger.
Acceptance is not permissiveness. It actually hinders adversarial relations and power struggles. Accept them as unique individuals; recognize accomplishments, emphasize the positive; and when you must say no, do so with love.

4. Need to Feel Included
Children can’t be included in everything, but make a conscious effort to include them in as many discussions, decisions, and activities appropriate to their maturity and family situation.
When you do things together, you will feel close to one another, strengthen relations with other family members, and improve communication. Families can also start feedback sessions where children can freely share their fears, concerns, questions about growing up, school, sex, and other subjects which they typically might be embarrassed to discuss.
Parents can also include children in their worklife by sharing information and introducing co-workers. This will help them better understand that part of your life.
Make a plan and involve them in planning. Having such activities will make them feel they’re an integral part of the family and will learn to appreciate their parents more.

5. Need to Feel Secure
Provide children with a stable, consistent, safe, and caring environment where they feel loved and protected. There should be a balance of freedom and control.
Establishing traditions and rituals like celebrating events or going on a holiday also provide a sense of stability and security.
As for discipline, a child is more secure when parents say what they mean, mean what they say, and appear united.
Children need to be in a positive environment where people get along, care about one another and consistently express love in words and actions. Seeing affection between parents and receiving affection is vital to the child’s sense of security.

I do hope you learned something valuable from the list. I am actually guilty of several points raised here, like we should treat kids with more respect, recognize their feelings, and include them in some family decisions. With the help of hubby, I'll be trying (very hard) to apply a more pro-active and consistent approach to parenting. As I've written before, parents could need all the help we could get!

Hug your kids, shower them with kisses, listen more. Enjoy parenting. :)
Happy Love Month!

Ready for the Sun with Beach Hut

It was our first Serenitea "tweet-up" and I was having great conversations with bloggers Noemi, Jane and Rone.  Noemi then spotted a friend there who, incidentally, is one of the young folks from Dragon Edge Group. This dynamic company is 100% Filipino-owned and carries the brand Beach Hut, among others.

Beach Hut Kids with SPF 65 is a mild, clear spray sunblock with a fresh citrus-orange scent. It's hypoallergenic and safe for everyday use. I guess we're at the right place, at the right time 'coz while we were chillin', the team from Dragon Edge surprised us with a bottle each to take home! Thank you! And what great timing since we'll be greeting in the summer very soon. But dermatologists always advise to apply sun screen daily, and not just when you're going out to the beach.

We were told this product has been in the market for five years now and I did remembered buying one a couple of years ago. I initially thought it was an imported brand with its attractive, colorful bottle design. I like it mainly because it's in a light spray form and the kids and I prefer it over sticky lotions. And I know it's much more affordable. Here is what's printed on the back:
  • Uber mild for kids, hypoallergenic
  • Rich in vitamin C & anti-oxidants
  • Fast and easy application
  • Sweat-proof, water-proof
  • No mess, no grease, not sticky
  • Extreme SPF 65 protection
  • Fresh citrus scent
Beach Hut also comes in different variants as you can see here in their website. Spray all over and you're ready for the sun (not directly on the face though)!

I just have to share our souvenir shot on that bright, cheery afternoon. 'Til the next "tweet-up" ladies!

Papa John's Pizza place is a Winner

Better ingredients, better pizza. That's the claim of this American pizza place we had the pleasure of visiting last weekend.

Just a week after opening, we trooped to the newly-opened flagship branch in the Philippines of Papa John's Pizza conveniently located (for us at least, heeheein the bustling Greenhills shopping district, along Annapolis Street.
It's imposing bi-level facade is what will greet customers. We were directed to the second floor for our family lunch. Since it was a double birthday celebration for hubby and younger brother, whose natal days are 2 days apart, we thought we'd try something new. Papa John's proved to be a winner!

Shark Tales...And Tails!

WARNING:  In case there are kids around, before you scroll further, make sure you can answer their "how", "why", "what", and more "why" questions after seeing this.  Rated: PG.

I woke up to a sunny Sunday morning...slept in 'til a little past 9...did my thing, went to the kids' room and kissed them good morning...then down I went to eat a light breakfast.

Half-way through my decaf, hubby quickly grabbed and pulled me toward the den/office to look at something. Thought there was sort of a surprise...and there it was...

OMG!!!
The small shark ATE the smaller one...whole!!!
See the tail from it's mouth up there? And look at the belly!!! Talk about cannibalism!

I rushed to call the kids and got my camera. While I was telling them about it, I was still half-shocked, half-amused, smiling and giggling a bit. Really didn't know how I should react. It was a first for everyone in the house to see such a sight. Surprising, but not unusual. It's in the shark's vicious aggressive nature, no matter how small they are.

"Mommy, why are you smiling?", the boy asked in bewilderment. Now that I thought about it, why was I smiling? After what had happened?!? Shame, shame. Sorry my dear boy, you're right, mommy should not be happy about this. It was totally my fault. Hubby feeds them in the morning, and it's my turn in the evening. We had guests over for dinner last night and so I completely forgot to feed the pets! Bad mommy. Tsk, tsk.

After a few curious questions, they ran up to their room and left mommy and daddy to deal with this. *Sigh*
Our small 5-gallon tank with 2 algae-eater fish (lower left side), and 2 mini hammer head sharks
And this was the most "disturbing" image I caught...it was trying to "spit out" the smaller one but after a few seconds, gobbled it up back in it's mouth again!

We don't know how long this shark can last like this, swimming in circles in the small tank with it's "friend" stuffed inside it.  Any fish doctor out there?

We'll just have to wait and see.
Abangan ang susunod na kabananta (watch out for the next episode)...

p.s. I don't think this is a hammer head shark, but that's what the staff at the pet store labelled it.

UPDATE:
It survived and eventually digested part of the fish inside, and spit out the tail-end. Eewww!

Foodie Friday: Pan-Seared Sole Fillet and Basil

First Friday of the month:  Mom-Cook / Recipe

The simplest meal can be the most delicious...

That's how I felt after savoring my fragrant, moist, melt-in-your mouth sole fillet for dinner the other week.

I always stock on fish fillets in the freezer for those days, and nights, when I want something light and nutritious for myself and the family. It's most convenient too when I'm pressed for time and need to serve a nice meal in a flash. And this was one of those days.

Fast and easy to cook, yet filling and big in flavor! This pan-seared sole fillet is cooked the same way as my most popular food post -- Tanigue Garlic Steak, with a slight twist. The aromatic fresh basil and lemon juice lend a refreshing taste to this delicious dish.

Pan-Seared Sole Fillet and Basil

2 sole fillets
sea salt / rock salt
black pepper
1 lemon, halved
1/2 cup flour
fresh sweet basil leaves
olive oil
2 tablespoons minced garlic
2 tablespoons butter

To prepare:
Season fillets with salt and fresh cracked pepper on both sides.
(Cook whole or your can slice each fillet in 4 to 5 pieces like I did)
Squeeze juice from half a lemon over the fillets.  Leave for 10 minutes.
Julienne around 10 basil leaves. Set aside.

Heat a non-stick pan or skillet.
In an shallow dish or plate, very lightly dredge fillets with flour.

To cook:
Pour olive oil, around 3 tablespoons, in the heated pan.
Lightly toast minced garlic until golden then sear fillets, around 3 minutes on each side, depending on thickness of fillet.
Before flipping over, sprinkle each slice with julienned basil leaves. Flip and toast until cooked through.
(Cook in two batches so as not to crowd your pan)
Fish will be soft and flaky when done.

Transfer to plate. Do not turn off heat.
In the pan, melt butter and squeeze half of the lemon (lemon-butter sauce)

Drizzle sauce over the plated fillets.
Garnish with more basil leaves and lemon wedge on the side if desired.
Serve immediately.

You can prepare and serve this dish in less than 30 minutes, with rice or potato mash. For this recipe, you can use any white flesh fish fillet like cream dory, bass, lapu-lapu (grouper) or labahita (sturgeon).

Somehow, this sweet sparkling apple juice makes a perfect match to this delectable dish. This pairing will definitely make another appearance on our dining table very soon!

A truly delightful 'meatless day' meal for the whole family!

Other fish dishes you may want to try:
Crunchy Panko on Fillets
Steamed King Fish in Light Soy
Creamy Salmon & Caviar Pasta
